A new chapter in the chronicles of troubled hard man Sam Fisher will be revealed by Ubisoft at E3, rumours would have us believe.

It will be called Splinter Cell: Black List, IGN reports, and is scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U in January 2013.

Although a new Splinter Cell game has never been officially announced, such a title has reportedly been in the works for some time with development being headed by Ubisoft’s Jade Raymond

The talk suggests that the somewhat weather-worn, aged Sam Fisher seen in Splinter Cell: Conviction is long gone, having been replaced with a leaner, fully-suited and night-goggle version of Sam more akin to earlier games.

Despite that, the site also reckons the game is a direct sequel to Conviction.

I'm in the mood for a new SC game so this would be cool.

This franchise needs a rest, they clear have no idea what to do with it going by the last couple of games. Make Sam relevant again and wait until next gen. Of course this isn't going to happen and they will follow on from Conviction

Conviction was great. It was like playing 24 the game. But a good one.

It certainly split opinion but I enjoyed Conviction as well. I can see why long term fans didn't really like the direction it went in. One of the things that disappointed me about Conviction were the graphics to be honest.

Even though the sub-title is so unimaginative, Jade Raymond and her team have been making the right noises about how it'll see a return to it's stealth roots and whatnot. Definitely one of the games i'm looking forward to seeing unveiled next week.

I really really hope they do, it was one of my favourite multiplayer experiences ever.

Genuinely, it's the best gaming experience i've had over the last couple of generations. The Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory versions were excellent. Double Agent was gooseberry fool, and then they scrapped it.

I think they're missing a trick by not including it. The appeal of that alone would do wonders for their sales.

Quite how you can lump Conviction in with the mess of a game that was Double Agent...

Conviction did make Splinter Cell relevant again, they'd be mad not to make another game off the back of that.

No mention of a PC version? Dafuq?

I loved Spies vs Mercs in Double Agent, the co-op campaign in Conviction was good fun but I hate that they didn't have that AND spies vs mercs. Hopefully both in the sequel...and a PC release.

It'll no doubt get a PC release a few months after all the others for no reason whatsoever.

Mix Convictions more action based gameplay with the traditional Chaos Theory's more spy (brain freeze what is he again? Forgot the word)STEALTH! More stealth based gameplay.

Perfect mix, needs split screen and online coop. Will buy splinter cell is always awesome

I really liked Conviction, it made you feel like a predator. And the plot worked well with that. I still play it from time to time, though it's a little short - a new one of these would be fantastic.

People who hate conviction hate fun and also like to whine whenever a series tries something new.

So a game where Sam Fisher hunts down phone thieves and disables their phones. They could make it like Uplink and have him work against people on EBay for selling dodgy phones

I'd rather have the proper Spy vs Mercs to be honest. Having the first vs third person perspective really added to the tension too.

God I miss that :(
