You'll need your sharpest sleuthing skills and some stellar dance moves as rhythm games get a twist of mystery in this all-action, toe-tapping title, exclusively on Nintendo 3DS.
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure combines a gripping story and a groovy beat as you take control of sharp-suited thief, Raphael, famous for stealing paintings only to return them several days later. You're on the case as you try to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance, all the while deftly dodging the police, sidestepping museum guards - and running into the Emperor Napoleon! This plot has more twists and turns than you can shake your thang at.
The action takes place in a gorgeously-rendered anime-style Paris, its bright lights and iconic landmarks brought to vivid life courtesy of the Nintendo 3DS. You'll race round the city, cracking puzzles, uncovering clues, and pilfering precious artworks - always returning the loot, of course. Raphael never misses a chance to get his groove on, and there are fifty rhythm-based challenges in store for you, mixing up Touch Screen tapping, stylus sliding and gyro sensor gyrating, all set to a pumping soundtrack.
The action ranges from thrilling rooftop chases to furtive visits to museums at night, pulling poses to match the statues and outfox the guards. You'll even need some killer moves to feed your faithful dog, Fondue. In Rhythm Thief, there's tonnes of tempo and tension to keep you on your twinkle toes, whether you're playing solo, taking on a friend in a range of rhythmic challenges, or collecting new fans via StreetPass.
So get ready to join Raphael as he unleashes his mightiest moves and stays one step ahead of the police. This is one conundrum-cracking rug-cutting caper you won't want to miss!
Collect fans via StreetPass by taking part in dance challenges, triggering new missions and encounters with new characters. Take on a friend in one of eight multiplayer levels, including dancing, shooting, and infiltration minigames. Unlock riddles with your rhythm as you rack up combos and search for the secrets lurking deep within the city.
I had been very excited to download and play this, but it disappointed thoroughly. I love rhythm action games and you can see that this had the chance to be great. Alas, it is without charm and rhythmically broken. The beats feel slightly off and the actions are minigame like. It reminded me of the very average Project Rub from the DS' launch.
EDIT: Also, the cut scenes between each series of actions went on too long.
I too was impressed by the demo. However, like Ouendan, I imagine it will get a lot more intense and enjoyable as the difficulty increases, as the three songs included were very straightforward. They weren't particularly memorable either, but that's only an short introduction, and I'd expect the full game to offer a lot more. I liked the variety in the levels as well, even though they weren't anything special individually. I felt that the music suited and matched the actions well, very strong presentation overall.
I'll probably pick it up then, though I can see it dropping in price very quickly, so I'll might give it a few months.
I wasn't paying that much attention to this, but I tried the demo and absolutely loved it! Thought it was really hilarious* and fun, I like how every level mixes it up a bit. Will be picking it up!
Japanese version reviewed. Sounds fanfuckingtastic!

Sega really went all out with Rhythm Thief. The visuals are spectacular, the music is fantastic, and the extras in the game, such as StreetPass functionality and various collectibles throughout the levels will keep players coming back for more. Skilled players should be able to get through the main story of the game within 8 to 10 hours but will have to put more time into the game if they want to access hidden songs or other in-game secrets. As both an adventure and rhythm game, Rhythm Thief is an excellent addition to the Nintendo 3DS library.
