I used mong instead of idiot or moron in the thread title as using those wouldn't fit.

Moving on heres a link to a rather depressing article about the attitude of some gamers.
http://www.giantbomb.com/news/when-passions-flare-lines-are-crossed/4006/

Quote:
Rea: That’s really unfortunate [inaudible]...the way it is right now, they want to enjoy fighting games, but they’re so incredibly turned off by [the language].

Bakhtanians: This doesn’t involve me, Jared, I don’t know if you can hear me--this is Aris. This doesn’t really involve me, but if you don’t like onions, you get your sandwich without onions, man. I mean, this is the fighting game community.

Rea: Can I get my Street Fighter without sexual harassment?

Bakhtanians: You can’t. You can’t because they’re one and the same thing. This is a community that’s, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it’s not the fighting game community--it’s StarCraft.
There’s nothing wrong with StarCraft if you enjoy it, and there’s nothing wrong with anything about eSports, but why would you want just one flavor of ice cream, you know? There’s eSports for people who like eSports, and there’s fighting games for people who like spicy food and like to have fun. There’s no reason to turn them into the same thing, you know?

What the actual strawberry float is going through someones mind when they come out with a statement like that?

Aris is a piece of gooseberry fool. He should have been off of Cross Assault. Super Yan shouldn't have felt like she had to quit.

It's like that classic senario at school, where the kid who's getting bullied moves schools. And the bully gets off scott free.

He certainly doesn't speak for the whole fighting game community. But it's like with any sport. You are going to get your sexist homophobic man children. But considering Alex Vaille (The other team captain) runs a stream that regularly features a top player who is openly gay and a female player, who never seem to get any flack. I can safely say not everyone in the fighting game community is like this.

That guy is a stupid banana split.

Doesn't surprise me, to be honest.

Also why most fighting games (at least as far as I'm aware) come from Japan.

Irrelevant question, but the answer is probably due to the fact that arcades can still make money in Japan in addition to the console version. Hence also why most shumps outside of the indie arena (and quite a few inside the indie arena) these days seems to be made in Japan.

Different cultures. Different views on equality between the two sexes. In may areas, Japan simply hasn't progressed as far as other comparable countries.

Did you even read the article? It's about an event in the US of A talking about the US fighting game scene.

Ah, the old "all Japanese is xenophobic" fallacy. Still totally irrelevant to the topic, since we're talking about an American being a douche on an internet television show made in America, produced by Americans and sponsored by American companies (and a Japanese one).

Japanese are a bit xenophobic, actually. I don't see what that has to do with this. Furthermore, I can't see where I mentioned that in my original post..

What kind of shite argument is that? So because Americans can be sexist (which is a no-brainer, considering how much Christianity influences their culture), this means Japanese culture isn't? :fp:

Just take a look at the character models in any fighting game, from Tekken to SF to Soul Calibur to Dead or Alive. Young women (or girls, even) with proportions that are closer to science fiction than plastic surgery even. Take a look at the typical subservient love interest in a JRPG. It's not surprising that this also colours the sub-cultures that spring up around these games.

I once studied Japanese (though sadly I don't remember too much of the language any more), and when you study a language you also need to study the culture. The slight sexism and xenophobia (again, relative to other comparable countries of course) are a part of Japanese culture.

So your logic is. Because an American played a game made in Japan (Who you for some reason think have bad equality) their supposed 'bad values' have rubbed off on him... through a fighting game... :fp:

He's not anonymous. He's a large part of the fighting game community (in Tekken at least) and a Team leader on a reality show Capcom have organised. It's about as bad as say, if a gaming journalist had written and article endorsing sexism and said it was part of gaming culture.

Sexual harassment, sexism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia and plain old name-calling and abuse is all part of multiplayer gaming on the whole. Either ignore it or join in. S'all part of the banta!

Your post doesn't make a lick of sense. We're talking about an American person, and you for some reason bring the Japanese into this.

Well sexual harassment is certainly a recurring thought in many teenage minds, mainly the ones who dont really have a social life and so do not have a real grasp on what sexual harassment really means. I would link sexual harassment more to the Manga/Anime scene, so I can relate to the guy who says that he sees it as a "Japanese thing"

Still, I think in this particular sector, sexual harassment remains largely confined within their minds, I sincerely doubt actual offenders have been influenced by fighting games, and I actually never thought about sexual harassment as part of gaming in general let alone fighting games.. unless you get off to blanka

I think it's basically some guy who uses sexual comments and insults to undermine and demoralize female players, and then trying to justify it by saying it's "part of the community". Absolute pondlife scum. I don't care how socially inept you are, there's no excuse for this.
