European PlayStation Vita sales have settled into a slump since Sony's machine launched earlier this year.

That's according to new figures released by Nintendo as part of its financial report. The data reveals that in Europe weekly 3DS sales are regularly more than double that of the Vita - sometimes far more.

And, just like in Japan, Vita is being outstripped sales-wise by ageing predecessor the PSP.

3DS sales figures have been particularly robust this year, nearing 100,000 weekly sales around the launch of the 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2. At a glance, the handheld appears to be selling as well in Europe as the Xbox 360, outmatched only by the PlayStation 3.

Last year it was a different story. In 2011 the 3DS struggled to match DS sales until its summer price-cut turned the machine's fortunes around. This year, 3DS has outstripped the DS every week by some margin.

European sales data is hard to come by and Nintendo's charts, shared online for investors yesterday, are the company's own estimates based on sales information provided by market research companies in each European country.

Sony acknowledged mistakes in marketing the PlayStation Vita as said by Sony PlayStation Germany Chief Uwe Bassendowski at gamescom.

The most important mistake was to lose sight of the younger audience, a mistake they want to make right again. According to Bassendowski they want to change the direction of PS Vita marketing to focus on a younger audience and they want to improve their presence in corresponding media.

Furthermore Bassendowski confirmed that 2.2 million device have been sold worldwide. Specific numbers for Germany were not given.

PS Vita hardware sales less than a third of the PSP after 10 weeks

Official Chart-Track data paints stark picture for Sony

PS Vita hardware sales are less than a third of where the PSP was at the same stage in its life cycle, official Gfk Chart-Track data has revealed.

Based on UK sales for the first 10 weeks, Sony's PS Vita handheld has, according to a well-placed industry source, shifted just over 100,000 units since its launch on February 22nd 2012.

Although Chart-Track declined to reveal the precise sell-through figure, the company's business group director Dorian Bloch confirmed the PSP had sold 3.5 times as many units as PS Vita achieved after 10 weeks on sale.

Bloch urged caution on making direct comparisons between the two systems.

"[PS Vita] was launched at a traditionally quiet time, and [PSP] was launched in the build-up to Q4," he told PocketGamer.

Bloch also noted that PS Vita costs an average of £54 more than the PSP, at £232 versus £178.

PSP was tough act to follow

By way of comparison, the Chart-Track stat guru pointed out that the PSP holds the UK record for the fastest-selling console in week one, as well as the record for the least number of weeks to achieve a one million user-base in the UK, at just 24 weeks.

Assuming the PS Vita takes 3.5 times longer to reach the magic one million mark, it will be late next year before Sony can expect to celebrate that milestone.

1.8 million. That's how many PlayStation Vitas were sold as of March 31, as per Sony.

The information was revealed in a Sony earnings call following the company's annual earnings report today.

CEO Kaz Hirai on the system's sales:
"About Vita," Mr. Hirai said, "the last year, [we sold] 1.8 million units for US, Japan, Asia and Europe. And as a starting phase, I think that was a good start."

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, today announced that the sales of the PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) portable entertainment system reached over 1.2 million units worldwide as of February 26, 2012. PS Vita experienced an initial burst of momentum when it launched on December 17, 2011 in Japan followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. Newly launched in North and Latin America, Europe and PAL territories as well as in Singapore on February 22, 2012, sales have exceeded expectations surpassing over 1.2 million units worldwide, firmly establishing PS Vita as the must-have portable entertainment device across the world. Software sales across the globe have surpassed 2.0 million units at both retail and on PlayStation®Network.

“PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. To sustain momentum, we’re working closely with 3rd party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe.”

PS Vita introduces new ways to play, delivering deep and immersive gameplay experiences that have never been offered on any other handheld gaming device. Equipped with dual analog sticks, a vibrant 5-inch high definition OLED multi-touch screen, powerful quad core processor, six-axis motion sensing system, built in microphone, and front and rear cameras, PS Vita is the ultimate portable entertainment system. In addition to the ultimate portable gaming experience, by having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, PS Vita will enable infinite possibilities for users to “encounter,” “connect,” “discover,” “share” and “play” with friends wherever they are.

With more than 25 titles currently available in North and Latin America, Europe and the PAL territories and Japan* respectively including EA SPORTS FIFA Football, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom®3 from Capcom, UNCHARTEDTM: Golden Abyss, WipEout® 2048 and Escape Plan from SCE Worldwide Studios, as well as over 70 titles in development, PS Vita is poised to drive continued momentum across the globe.

Note:

This includes 590k Japanese sales.
The 1.2m figure comes from estimated sales and pre-orders.

Sales of Sony's PS Vita console got off to a "disappointing" start in the UK, it has been confirmed.

Week one Chart-Track figures reveal that Sony's new handheld device sold "around one quarter" of the number of the 185,000 PSP units shifted in the UK during its first week
on sale back in September 2005.

Half-hearted

Although exact data has not been publicly announced by either Chart-Track or Sony, industry sources have confirmed that the figure is "just over half" of the 89,000 sold by the Nintendo 3DS in its first week almost a year ago.

With pre-orders of Vita reportedly around the 70,000 mark, Sony will be hoping that the generally positive critical reception to its new device will coax cash-strapped consumers into shelling out for its next generation handheld.

The news comes hours after Sony elected to publish a global figure for Vita sales to date of 1.2 million.

With total Japanese sales confirmed as being 578,812 on February 19th, the remaining 600,000 will have been split between the remaining worldwide territories.

Figures from other Western territories have yet to emerge.

'We all saw it coming'

Meanwhile, one senior source felt that the low UK sales should not come as a surprise.

"It's disappointing, sure, but we all saw it coming," said the source.

"Realistically, I think a lot of people can see it's technically a great system, but people just don't have the cash to shell out for the same game twice. A lot will be waiting for a true system seller before taking the plunge, or, more likely, be happier continuing to pay 69p for dozens of mobile games.

"The market has changed," the source concluded.

Almost a year after Nintendo’s 3DS launch (week 12, 2011) and we welcome Sony’s Vita hand-held, available in Wi-Fi and 3G versions (79% of Vita sales in week 1 were for the Wi-Fi version).

There are 23 Vita launch titles at retail (compared to 16 for 3DS week 1), but 2 key Vita titles account for 50% of sales units and lie at No1 & No2 on the All Formats Chart. Sony’s Vita ‘Uncharted: Golden Abyss’ is the new No1 (31% of week 1 Vita sales) and EA’s Vita ‘FIFA Football’ is the new No2 (18% of Vita sales).

In comparison, the week 1 No1 on 3DS ‘Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition’ accounted for 15% of 3DS week 1 software sales. Last week’s No1, THQ’s ‘UFC Undisputed 3’ drops to No3 (-53%) and Ubisoft’s ‘Rayman Origins’ climbs 31 places to No5 (+197%), powered by a new Vita version, No4 on the Vita Top 20.

The biggest non-Vita launch is EA’s re-boot of UK developer Bullfrog’s ‘Syndicate’ which debuted back in week 26, 1993 for Amiga and PC. The new ‘Syndicate’ is Swedish (developed by StarBreeze) and debuts here at No7 for 360/PS3/PC.

The next new entry at No11 is Sony’s Vita ‘Wipeout 2048’, actually No3 on the Vita Top 20. Following on from that we have Nintendo’s Wii ‘The Last Story’ at No15, developed by Mistwalker, the studio of Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series of videogames.

New at No17 is Bethesda’s ‘Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition’ which contains all mission expansion add-on packs.

I'd say it's a poor launch, even the psp sold 185k in its UK launch alone. 600k for the US, Europe, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and latin America not that impressive. Obviously the real story will be in the weeks and months to come.

Are they selling at a profit this time? That's probably the most important thing.

It's sony, I'm going to take a wild stab at no. They never seem to sell things at a profit.

Comparing the handheld market to 2004/5 is no longer a fair comparison. Even by Sony's own admission its a shrinking market. Vita may reach or come close to the original PSP numbers, but neither the Vita or 3DS will come anywhere near that of the DS.

Using ground-breaking technology, I have managed to forecast the next 6 months of sales for PSVita.

Outside of Japan maybe, but I highly doubt it'll reach PSP numbers in Japan.

Looking at some other figures it looks pretty healthy.

Not much behind 3ds, a fair bit behind PSP but healthy in this economy.

Bodes well once they get the price down that it can hopefully capture an ongoing software sales base in a way psp failed to. Needs to get those software prices way down though.

That was 185k people moaning about loading times and battery life, vs 125k people eulogising about the incredible line up and making me want a Vita so hard.

I suspect the Vita will be ok in the long-run.

That brand combined with a product that's worthy of the devotion (if costly)? you'd have to think Nintendo will be worried this time.

Those numbers are going to be more the core audience than anything. Can they get their love out to an expanded audience or do people kind of expect it from them anyway? We'll soon see.

It's amazing that people are talking about the machine bombing when it's only been on sale in Europe and the US for a week. The figures they are using include only 4 days worth of sales in those regions.
I don't think you can tell anything about the future of the machine from sales figures just yet. Why does everything have to break sales records before it's considered anything but a failure?

Thought Sony only did shipped figures.

Hopefully it sells well and is profitable for Sony as I'd be tempted to purchase one in the future when it's cheaper.

If the Vita topic on here is anything to go by then those that do have a Vita love it and once others see what it can do then it deserves to pick up sales. I find it odd when you see gamers wanting a system that has so specifically been designed for them to fail.

We also seem to love seeing them fail for some reason though. I don't automatically love new hardware as I really didn't like the 3DS from the moment I bought it which does kind of make my strategy of not even trying them before I buy look ever so slightly stupid but that's not the point.
