EA is doing away with its Online Pass program from this point forward, a decision the publisher says is partially based on player response.

“Yes, we’re discontinuing Online Pass,” EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg confirmed to GamesBeat in an e-mail. “None of our new EA titles will include that feature.”

Battlefield 3 and a number of other EA games such as Madden NFL use Online Pass. You need it in order to play many of a game’s online features, including multiplayer. A code activates the Pass, which has a one-time use. You need a new code (which the publisher offers, of course, for a fee) if you’re playing the game on another console or if you bought the software used and the original owner redeemed the original. But players never embraced this feature.

“Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format,” Reseburg said. “We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”

Online Pass is seen by publishers as a bulwark against the second-hand market, which retailer GameStop dominates. Publishers were worried that consumers were buying games used instead of new — especially big games with popular multiplayer modes. So the online pass became a way that publishers forced consumers to either buy a game new — or pay extra for online.

But from this point forward, you won’t need an Online Pass for any of EA’s games online.

“We’re still committed to creating content and services that enhance the game experience well beyond the day you first start playing,” Reseburg said.

EA wasn’t the only publisher using an online pass system. Activision and Ubisoft are among a handful that make use of it.

Will be interesting to see how other major publishers react. Good news on the surface but there could be a dark underworld.

Mumble podcast earlier today on PCS - "last gen sports games were the reigning kings on console, sales are lagging for sports games this gen".

Do a lot of sports games use this online pass feature? I can only hope that EA are suffering from squadering their goodwill and are in damage control mode.

Every EA Sports game from about 2009 (I think) has used the online pass.

Seems they've been making quite a few changes since being voted the worst company again. It's weird though that they're making all these decisions before they've even got a new permanent CEO.

You don't need an online pass if you're to be paying a subscription...

Micro transactions and 'premium' models I reckon. EA are simply go to cave into the the second hand market after fighting so hard so long. Money grabbing tits.

I hate them. These 'online passes' have meant I've missed out on going online on many games as I've bought them pre-owned. I've actually sworn a vow to myself to not purchase EA anymore, they're up there with Arriva on badly run companies.

This is a trojan offering fom EA; I feel like I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth and discovering something very unpleasant.

Good move, it should be one licence, one user. The entire game should be tied to the buyer's account so that selling on is not possible.

Games are now tied to a single console upon first use

It does beggar belief that EA ever seriously thought online passes was the way to go. :fp: I dunno. EA...they really don't do themselves any favours with their myopic corporate tunnel vision.

On the surface that's good. I've barely bought ea stuff since they started doing as it was unfair to multi console families like us. They've received a lot less money from us.

However my fear is this is because in future the entire game will tie to one account.

I can understand why online passes are being used from the view that preowned game sales doesn't go to the publishers.

I would rather this method than "one licence one console" DRM method to be honest. I wouldn't be surprised if they did go down that route.
