The guys at OpenELEC, an embedded OS built specifically to run XBMC, have announced their first ARM port and with it, support for Raspberry Pi. (Please note that although their website says that they can only support the Model B, the post was written just before we announced the upgrade doubling the Model A’s RAM.) I’m a week or so late to the party on this – apologies to Gimli and Stephan for the delay in posting this while we wrestled with launch stuff here.

Anything you run on a regular basis on your desktop that doesn't require a lot of power.

Shunt as many tasks over to it as you can, and only boot up the desktop of stuff like games which actually requires the grunt. It'll probably pay for itself in electricity usage alone.

That would involve running the dreaded Linux as my general OS, and forget that.

Not nessicarily. Embedded Linux may currently be the preferred environment of the foundation, but there are bound to be others along in due course. I'll be very surprised if we don't see Android along shortly, among others.

Plus, it's booting from an SD Card. You could tailor an environment for each specific task you want it to do and just switch the SD card. Hell, the Pi is cheap enough that you could run an entire network of of boxes each dedicated to an individual task.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted by getting another to use as a dedicated UAE box.

AmigaOS in a box!

TPB LOSS

We were down a few hours earlier today. There's no need to worry, we haven't been raided this time. We're only upgrading stuff since we're still growing.

One of the technical things we always optimize is where to put our front machines. They are the ones that re-direct your traffic to a secret location. We have now decided to try to build something extraordinary.

With the development of GPS controlled drones, far-reaching cheap radio equipment and tiny new computers like the Raspberry Pi, we're going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometers up in the air. This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war.

We're just starting so we haven't figured everything out yet. But we can't limit ourselves to hosting things just on land anymore. These Low Orbit Server Stations (LOSS) are just the first attempt. With modern radio transmitters we can get over 100Mbps per node up to 50km away. For the proxy system we're building, that's more than enough.

But when time comes we will host in all parts of the galaxy, being true to our slogan of being the galaxy's most resilient system. And all of the parts we'll use to build that system on will be downloadable.

Awesome.

Right up until the US military use UAV's of their own to take them down.

The capability is more interesting than them actually using them.

You do realise how expensive a UAV mission is relative to the cost of putting one up is, not to mention the issues encountered by shooting down aircraft in other countries airspace.

Naturally. I do it all the time. It's IN NO WAY a ludicrous solution to a ridiculous problem.

(though laying aside the practicalities for a moment, I'd imagine that one of the benefits of UAV use would be in it's inherent deniability)

Are these actually available now? I'd be interested in using them for server and art installation purposes.

Should be soon. There was a production fuckup resulting in non functional network hardware which has now been remedied, and both the current distributors have further delayed the distribution until the hardware can be CE certified (though, there's some doubt as to whether or not it's even nessecary for these development boards).

Either way, I ordered one a month ago and I got an email about a week ago saying the earliest I'll get it is "late May", so I wouldn't hold your breath about getting it to any sort of deadline, GG.

Palletised Pis

Jack's removed one from the box (remember, it's the size of a pack of cards) and put it on top so you can get an idea of scale.

Quote:
And finally, some of you were asking whether there were any photos of the Raspberry Pis we have already in the UK. (We showed you some pictures from the factory the other day.) Jack, trustee extraordinaire and our COO, sent me these. Sadly, he has not done the hostage proof-of-life thing by making the pallet hold today’s newspaper, nor has he balanced a cucumber sandwich and a cup of tea on the Raspberry Pis to demonstrate that they are in England; but they’re here, waiting to go out to you as soon as EM tests are passed and the CE docs are filed.

Deliveries have started!
http://www.raspberrypi.org/
Quote:
A few people have got their Raspberry Pis today, and more should be arriving on doorsteps on Monday. Serial production has begun, so the backlog should be cleared sooner than some of you were hoping, and we hope that this means that some time over the next week or so element14 and RS will be able to give you firmer delivery estimates than we’ve been able to generate so far.

And finally: how’s your Japanese? Mine’s non-existent, but I still think this is my favourite piece of TV coverage yet.

I'm tempted by one of these (mainly due to the price).

Some of the stuff we do at work is done in Python, although I've not idea how to code anything.

I'd also be interested if there was any software available that allowed me to control my telescope.
