What would you need to add wi-fi to one of these?

USB wifi dongle which is supported in Linux + a USB hub.

I was thinking about getting one of these for another media pc running XBMC. It will be a while yet until a build will run on it though and its lack of peripherals will be an issue as I need wireless networking and the tend not to work quite so well on these bare bones xbmc builds. Tried to run XBMC live and OpenElec on my Revo without any success so ended up running on windows.

They estimate that it shouldn't be more than a month to the next batch. It seems that Farnell and RS are licenced to actually produce the Pi themselves now, which should boost the rate at which we see later batches arrive. Indeed, it seems both Farnell and RS will actually produce to order.

Quote:
Why are we using a licensed manufacture model?
The involvement of RS Components and Premier Farnell means that we can build volume much, much faster than would have been possible on our own. We are no longer limited to batches of only 10k Raspberry Pis; the Raspberry Pi will now be being built to match demand.

Another nice announcement is that both models of the Pi are now set to have the same amount of onboard RAM.

I hope so. I could get a pre order into my basket, but that took an hour and then I couldn't get any further. I'll leave it for now. :(

The Wifi option is the simplest approach, but there are other possibilities. Potentially you could wire up a wireless chipset to the IO bus, as you might do with an Arduino.

I'd fully expect to see a whole bundle of interesting hardware addons for that IO bus.

It's basically a mobile phone chipset. I can't imagine that it needs a lot of ventilation.

Manufacturing hiccup
Quote:
It’s inevitable, isn’t it – you’re freewheeling along perfectly happily and then you get a puncture.

As you’ll have noticed, there’s been a bit of a delay in shipping the first batch of Raspberry Pis out to people. This is because of a hardware parts substitution that was made in the factory by accident: specifically, where we’d specified jacks with integrated magnetics in the BOM and schematics, the factory soldered in non-magnetic jacks. No magnetics means no network connection. We’ve known about this for four days now, but we haven’t been able to tell you about it because it meant we had to do some further tests to make sure that nothing else was affected.

Anything you run on a regular basis on your desktop that doesn't require a lot of power.

Shunt as many tasks over to it as you can, and only boot up the desktop of stuff like games which actually requires the grunt. It'll probably pay for itself in electricity usage alone.
