Anyone else been playing the Tribes: Ascend Beta? I know that friend keys are doing the rounds, spread all thanks to Delusibeta
I'm interested to play more of this as it's a very different take on multiplayer man-shooting. It has all the hallmarks of a typical title, large battlefields, multiple classes, vehicles etc but it adds some interesting things to the mix, mainly jetpacks and zero-friction boots, enabling you to soar and ski around the maps, making actually shooting people quite the challenge. Plus you earn currency for doing stuff, which you then spend on upgrading turrets, radar, base generators etc, as well as to get vehicles, meaning that they are more valued than the constant supply of them that you get in games like battlefield, and more people are actually fighting rather than queueing for tanks etc.
It's on a F2P model, so you get 2 classes to start with that are fairly respectable, and earn tokens to unlock others as you go, but of course can buy them with real cash. However, if you buy any in-game currency during the closed beta, you get VIP status permanently, which gives you more XP and tokens, so you can unlock other classes faster.
To get into the beta you either have to win a key or wait to be given one from them, pre-purchase it or be given one from a friend. I got one from Delusi and passed it on, it should be doing the rounds amongst PCGT folk.

No game is worth going prematurely bald over.

I'm actually tempted to pay up for VIP, because apparently they get three beta keys, replaced regularly.
I didn't know that part, only the boost to XP and tokens. Well, there may be more keys available from me then.
I got the basic 800 Tribes Points or whatever, as that's the cheapest, and unlocked - i've totally forgotten their names - the engineer and infiltrator classes. I got the cheap heavy-armour class with tokens i'd earned, bringing my total up to 4.

I downloaded the beta client but the first time I tried to play I couldn't find any servers. The second time (a few weeks later) I couldn't log in at all.
Shame because Tribes 2 is my favourite game of all time. The best gametype was "Shocklance Deathmatch".
Wow, reinstalled this yesterday and the UI has changed a bit. I'm glad that they've refuned my gold and XP, meaning I have a shedload to spend unlocking stuff again, which is nice.

They've actually refunded double gold if you bought before the big patch.
Also this game owns with the sole exception of the Technician thumper being so overpowered.
Hi-Rez has taken the fundamentals of Tribes and polished them until they shine, but this is no mere rehash. The class designs change Capture the Flag utterly, transforming it into a masterpiece of high-speed tactical manoeuvring that has a niche for every kind of play-style.
Tribes Ascend only really does one thing, but does it pretty much perfectly. The best games never die, remember? And sometimes, they evolve.
10/10

Say what you want but if this Halo TV series is a BIG BUDGET Game of Thrones style series with Spielberg directly producing this could be a Band of Brothers in space.
