Forerunners. :shifty:

Or whoever was responsible for the Forerunners disappearing (ala Mass Effect).

They specifically mentioned Forerunners, they alluded to old/familiar foes. Who got rid of the Forerunners would be a good shout for the main enemy though

The Covenant is pretty divided at the moment, not sure there even really is a proper Covenant any more.
For instance, the Elites (Sangheili) are doing their own thing and are still fighting the Brutes (Jiralhanae), the Brutes are also fighting amongst themselves, the Prophets (San 'Shyuum) have vanished (either went into hiding or died out, there was only about 1000 of them left after High Charity was taken by the Flood), the Engineers (Huragok) have helped humans on a few occasions and some are stationed on the latest UNSC ship (which has incorporated Forerunner and Covenant technologies), the Grunts (Unggoy) will follow whoever happens to be bossing them around, and the Jackals (Kig-yar) have co-existed and traded with humans in the past and would probably be happier with that arrangement.
It'll be interesting to see where the various races stand when this new threat appears in Halo 4.

I'd assume the brutes would side with whoever they think would win... That doesn't mean the new threat would embrace them though, they could just want to eradicate all possible threats.

As for the jackals, aren't they essentially mercenaries for hire?

The engineers are pretty neutral, aren't they? The only reason they assisted the covenant is because they had bombs strapped to them...

As for grunts, I have a feeling they're going to near enough wiped out in the next trilogy arc, not sure why. Just a hunch.

As for the new enemy, weren't the forerunners at war with humans at some point? Could this be a left over forerunner world being awoken by chiefs arrival? If it is I'd guess that they learn of the flood outbreak and attempt to purge the galaxy. Again. A comment made by one of the devs "Earths technology has progressed significantly since the end of the covenant war...", well how far would the forerunners progress given the time they've been "away"?

Next Halo book info, the follow-up to Halo: Glasslands -
Quote:
Tor Books has just announced the title and release date for the second novel in the Karen Traviss’s “Kilo-Five Trilogy” of Halo books, the follow-up to last October’s Halo: Glasslands. Halo: The Thursday War will release on October 2, 2012.

Halo: The Thursday War picks up immediately where Halo: Glasslands left off, with forces on Earth and among the Covenant threatening a peace that is precarious at best. With a splinter group among the Sangheili pushing for war, some human colonies rebel against earth authority; and as ONI policy continues to shift with the volatile situation in space, the discovery of a trove of Forerunner technology on Onyx provokes leaders on Earth to seek uses for it in the conflict. For the fight is far from over….

“I wanted to focus on what it feels like to operate in a fragile ceasefire that’s turning into a mass of small, unpredictable wars where the enemy is much harder to spot and define,” says author Karen Traviss. “It’s not about big set piece space battles, superheroes, and hardware; this is a messy conflict seen at close quarters by real people with their own problems, whether those people are human, alien, or artificial intelligences.”

“From the very first page, The Thursday War propels you into a universe on the brink of chaos,” says Frank O’Connor, Franchise Development Director, 343 Industries. “It will immerse you immediately and enthrallingly into the events and circumstances that will come to define the state of the Halo universe in Halo 4. I can’t wait for fans and newcomers alike to experience the sequel to Glasslands.”

October release, which means Halo 4 isn't coming in September (this book was said to be released before the game)...

I think Glasslands is my favourite Halo book, it'd be FoR, but the second half of that book has been made largely irrelevant by Reach. :?

Really love the characters and the way the different story strands intertwine in Glasslands.

I found both Forerunner books to be a bit plodding and ponderous in the middle sections, although the ending to Primordium was fantastic.

I still need to catch up with the books I've missed. Then again it'll give me something to do till Halo 4 comes out and by that time I'll be so hyped it'll be great.

Have Microsoft said what the guys who did Anniversary are doing now? Are they helping on Halo 4 or will they be doing work on whatever ends up being the first game in the Halo franchise for the nextbox?

Nope. Maybe they'll do Halo 2: Anniversary some day.

Certain Affinity did the Anniversary maps, Reach's Defiant Map Pack and some Halo 2 maps too - they're probably the best bet for additional Halo 4 maps if 343 is looking to outsource them.
