The next installment into Konami's relatively successful survival horror series is returning to PS3 and 360. Set to be released in the first half of 2011, you take control of prisoner Murphy Pendleton who whilst escaping the police after his transport bus crashes, finds himself in that godawful town.

With Akira Yamaoka, Joe Romersa and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn now working with Grasshopper on an unannounced project, the music falls into the hands of Dan Licht, composer for the TV show Dexter and going by the trailer seems to be doing a pretty darn good job.

The survival horror experience begins after a prison transport vehicle careens off the road, leaving lone inmate Murphy Pendleton stranded in Silent Hill. Gamers will encounter mind-bending puzzles, as well as horrific creatures and other world terrors using everyday objects from wooden chairs to glass bottles to fend off their enemies. The natural response, fight or flight is left to the player as they unravel a dark, thought-provoking storyline which will appeal to fans of the early, classic Silent Hill series, as well as anyone who enjoys a deep, psychological horror experience. In addition to the main storyline, players will also be presented with variable side quests along the way that can change depending on their play style, revealing unknown evils within the town. IGN

In a recent interview with Tom Waltz hinted at a possible historical storyline, and that a character in the new Silent Hill comic set in the 1860's would be appearing in the game.

Gone with the working title of Silent Hill 8; Silent Hill: Downfall has been revealed to be the latest entry in the horror series. Newcomer developer Vatra aims to make this title new, but stick true to classic Silent Hill formula. Game Informer has had exclusive time with a demo of the title, and their February issue contains a 5 page article filled with info. We have summed up the new gameplay features in Silent Hill: Downpour below. Hit the jump for the full list.

.Obvious and subtle gameplay choices affect the story.

.The game has fixed camera angles like the original Silent Hill titles.

.Water is a huge part of gameplay and ‘otherworld’ transitions.

.Enemy chase scenes similar to Silent Hill: Shattered Memories return.

.The ability to look over your shoulder and knock down objects to slow enemies returns from Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

.Real time level changes.

.Puzzle difficulty returns.

.Clothing changes.

.No weapon inventory.

.Combat is similar to the classic titles, but with an Origins-like limited weapon durability.

.Weapons range from everyday items to small arms.

.Damage is indicated by bloody clothes.

.Two enemies revealed: The Creeper and The Screamer.

.Boss battles contain Quick-Time-Events.

.Weapon specific paths return from Silent Hill: Homecoming.

.Silent Hill’s subway can be used to travel around town.

.The map is very large.

.About 10 hour campaign.

.Multiple side-quests.

.No returning location themes (Hospital, school)

.Time of day shifts (Real time not confirmed)

A Silent Hill without Akira is going to be interesting, as will it be with another new developer, and I was a big fan of Homecoming (with all its flaws) so I remain optimistic.

Vatra = Kuju.

Still interested. Would have been more interested if their London studio was part of the team developing it.

I'd like to see Rocksteady do a Silent Hill.

Yeah, Homecoming was amazing (Apart from Scarlett :x)

Hopefully this'll be just as good :) Just as long as they don't include the weapon wear from Origins :shifty:

I really think they need to go in a different story direction, the whole hidden guilt/ fears/ personal tradegy things have been done to death now and there really isn't anything new to do in that area.

The Room went in the right direction I think.

In the footage, which appeared to be an in-engine recording of gameplay from one or both of the current HD consoles, a male character resembling James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2 awoke from a public bench and began wandering the foggy, deserted streets of a suburban neighborhood. While the game's title was not revealed, given the recent revisiting of the original Silent Hill in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, a remake of the second game in the series doesn't seem too far-fetched.

A potential SH2 remake would be amazing if the game was in the hands of a proven dev. :(

personally i dont think SH2 needs to be remade. t was a phenomenal game that still looks good even by todays standards. They need to focus on moving the series forward instead of revisiting past glories. and we all know how it ends now too, so it wouldnt have the same impact a second time

Ugh, a remake. How uninspiring if true.

I've noticed the past few games (Homecoming and to a slightly lesser extent Shattered Memories) have been a bit dull in the middle, almost feeling like filler up until an excellent final 2 hours.

They should really focus hard on making the WHOLE game feel important, with scary moments (and set pieces) like the Mirror Room from 3, and have a lot more imagination because the environments feel very uninspiring, Shattered Memories is very guilty of this.

Homecoming had some pretty eerie areas, like the cemetary and the nightmare section leading to the church.

Image

Obviously the story is the most important and Shattered Memories was great because the story was always rubbish (compared to the rest) in the first Silent Hill anyway. I really can't see them topping 2 without copying it.

Being a massive fan of the second game, this comes as worrying news if it does turn out to be a remake. SH2 does not need to be remade as it's still one of the most important games in its genre even today, with atmosphere and design that has yet to be matched.

Still, I was sceptical of Shattered Memories and that appears to be solid enough - I shall play it soon enough on my new Wii - so perhaps I should be a little more open-minded here.

It'd be more of a re-imaging.

But yeah, I agree with you...it's not a game that really needs to be remade, especially by a virtually unknown developer.
