You've always been able to turn the grid on or off in Civ...not sure about the switch to hex from squares though.

They were technically hexagons before anyway as you could go diagonally across squares. This just makes it clearer.

edit: That would actually make it an octagon. Geometry fail :fp:

It was always a minor (very minor) irritation in Civ IV that the grids were square, but the towns grew to fill a diamond shape on the map, and roads connected diagonally.

This years looking like it might tempt me back into gaming again as I've not bothered playing anything seriously for a long time now. Civ 5 will be amazing :D .

This is not a game about shiny graphics but about taking a Civilization from the dawn of time to the space age and beyond. The games appeal is in the variation and the freedom to rule as you see fit.
I for instance always start of with the intention to build a Civilisation built on education and peace but almost always end up living and dying by the sword.
