Aren't those variants just kits though? I thought the 3/3.5 system of taking levels in any number of mix and match classes (then prestige classes) a lot more complicated.

Multi-classing in 2nd edition was the ultimate headfuck. It was WAY too easy to completely destroy a character with a poorly thought out multi-classing decision.

Speaking as someone who knows nothing about D&D rules how is that possible?

I bought Baldur's gate during a GOG sale, but it never clicked with me (not that I gave it very long).

It's not exactly easy to get to grips with if you barely know anything about the rules, is it? I tried reading the manual (which seemed very well made, but way too complicated at 150-odd pages). They should have made a beginner's guide or something, because I just felt overwhelmed by it all.

I might give it another chance if the reviews are good.

Poor class synergies, levelling in original class suspended until you "catch up" with your original class.

That said, there are some devastatingly overpowered multi-class builds.

Mercifully, you can't really go wrong in 2nd Ed if you stick to a pure class. And even with a good DM even poorly built classes can be fun to play.

Not really. But it helps if you have the original manuals.

I was gobsmacked the day I realised that certain types of weapons would get bonuses against certain types of enemies. (seriously, buy most of your party a blunt weapon to equip in a quick-weapon slot.and switch to it when you engage the undead in melee to see what I mean).

It's not easy to learn, but the depth is rewarding.

So they've announced the platforms. PC and… iPad.

Wow, wasn't expecting that.

The same thing went through my mind for a split second before I realised I have a PC, and that's utterly stupid.

And they haven't said that that's all the platforms it'll be out on, although it wouldn't surprise me.

I don't think it's stupid at all. This is one of very few games that should feel enhanced, rather than retarded, by the platform

Yeah, you're absolutely right, buying a 400 quid device to play a game which you already have access to isn't stupid at all.

Baldurs Gate on a nice high-res touch-screen does sound glorious, though.

Especially if multi-player works.

If they've optimised this for the new iPad, which I assume they will have, this is a day one purchase.

EDIT: I do like the fact that the iPad shots are quite clearly photoshopped!

Well, if that's the entire selection of platforms, I'm oot. Would have paid good money for this too.

Bioware :fp:

It's not Bioware. Infact, I'm not sure they have any involvement in this at all. Don't Atari still have the D&D licence?

Does the presence of an iPad version mean the PC version will have to sell much cheaper than it initially would have? I'm not familiar enough with the market but I'm assuming that it would be near impossible to sell something at £15-£20 on the iPad (which would be my assumption on the PC price).

Well, if they've jailbroken the new iPad by then...maybe purchase was the wrong word.

In that case, I take back my facepalm, and direct it towards whoever's publishing this time.

Atari :fp:
