I would like to see my ex, have done before when I visit her country as we're still friends but this is while I was single.

Good or bad idea?

So your showing windows 7, windows 8.1?

Good luck.

His ex will just be all like "Look at her trashy Metro UI apps. She doesn't even have a strawberry floating Start menu for Christ's sake, what do you even see in her?" and then she'll get drunk and be all "Remember our Homegroup? What happened to it, surely we could put it back together, share files and printers like we used to?" and it'll be super awkward.

Apparently the start menu is not coming back in the next big update but at some unspecified date. Boo.

So, it seems MS is essentially fading out Modern UI in PC Windows 8 and making it simply an added feature for anyone who wants it (probably the less technically savvy crowd or for use in home media centres). The same OS but with interfaces geared differently to different devices... which is exactly what I wanted in the first place, but never mind.

I think they've responded to the backlash from conventional Desktop and laptop users. Should have been like this from the start. Once the Start Menu returns, there'll be no real need to stick with Windows 7 other than business use.

I am pleased to see they're making the fixes free. But Windows 8 should have been like that from day 1.

PC World wrote:The Windows 8.1 Start menu could show up this summer

The score is 2-1 in favor of the Start menu landing on Windows 8.1 while the weather's still warm. Following reports claiming the Start menu would appear this fall, two well known Microsoft watchers say the highly anticipated update could be here before the summer is out.

Both the Verge's Tom Warren and ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley report that Microsoft hopes to deliver the Start menu to Windows 8.1 users by August.

Hope being the operative word.

Microsoft wants to deliver updates to Windows more rapidly to keep pace with similar fast release cycles on Android and iOS that are progressively becoming more powerful. But there is a chance the Start menu could be pushed back to spring 2015 for the rumored Windows 9 release, Warren reports.

The return of the Start menu is easily one of the most exciting pieces of news for Windows 8.1 PC users. Microsoft announced the UI upgrade earlier in April.

Not only will Microsoft bring back a central piece of the Windows desktop interface, the revamped Start menu also makes practical use of modern UI apps for PC users. Part of the new Start menu will include live tile-like behavior where you can take a quick look at updates such as weather, calendar appointments, and news headlines supplied by modern apps, as seen in the Microsoft-supplied image at the top of this article.
Waiting for a window

If the Start menu does show up in August, however, the next Windows update won't solve all of the problems for Windows 8.1 desktop users. Both Warren and Foley say the ability to run modern apps in desktop-style windowed mode aren't expected to land until the purported Windows 9 release, codenamed Threshold, next spring.

Warren notes that Microsoft is "pushing" to release a modern app windowed mode in August along with the Start menu. Although from the sounds of it that target seems like a long shot.

Windows 8 will go down in history as another Vista-level catastrophe I think, whereas Windows 9 will be the equivalent of 7.

Okay, so after the last update I got the ability to minimise apps to the taskbar, or close them by clicking x, which makes them much more useful. Also, I can do reach power options from a button right on the start screen rather than having go through settings. Good update. I'm sure there is some other stuff I have not noticed yet.

The Windows cycle continues. Although I have 8.1 now, and the recent updates have made it more usable.

Got a good update to Windows 8.1 today. Just minor tweaks I guess, but better for those who work mainly in the desktop.

The simplest change is there is now a power button on the start screen, so you don't have to go to the right corner to switch off.

Then the start screen apps now also have minimize and close buttons if you hover at the top of the app. If you minimize an app in this way, it shows up in your taskbar on the desktop so you can get straight back to it and minimizing also takes you automatically into the desktop.

That update has been out for a couple of weeks now.

It is just a normal Windows Update. Do you have them set to download but not install as that would mean it sits for a while until it forces the install.
