Ugh. If you're going to do it - do it properly.
I've got a cold filtered slow drip. Bloody lovely stuff.

It's ridiculously easy - just put your coffee and cold water into a cafetiere, plunge it up and down a couple of times to mix it, then leave it in the fridge overnight with the plunger up. Serve over ice, diluted with cold water/with milk to taste.

It doesn't have the burnt, bitter taste that espresso over ice can sometimes have. Would recommend if anyone's having a garden party.

I'm going to give that a try :D .

I don't doubt that the proper kit is better, but for decent results without a big outlay the simple method is good enough.

I got an Aeropress for Christmas and am really liking it so far. Took me a few goes before I got to the stage of really liking it. I'm still probably doing it wrong but ho-hum. I'm doing the inverted technique as it makes the most sense. I tried getting the water to about 75 degrees but found it got cold way too quickly so I put it in slight hotter. It's very noticeable how much better it is than a standard French Press. Really smooth and intense flavours.

I'm drinking a very nice coffee ground though. I was in Amsterdam and went to a really nice breakfast spot on my last day. It was empty so I had a chat with the girl behind the counter and she gave me a bag of an experimental mix they are working on for Aeropress for FREE! Dutch people  :D (apart from Dblock)

I still use my Bialetti for espresso though as it makes the best one for me.

apparently 85 is the best for AeroPress

If you've got a grinder - you really should check out Square Mile Coffee roasters. they roast to order and deliver straight away so it's as fresh as it comes. Expensive but the best coffee I've ever had. Consistently excellent and occasionally mind blowing quality.

I prefer mine made with a little espresso stove and the milk heated and then frothed in a cafetiere.

Ive also got a siphon machine which makea bout 400ml of Americano type coffee which is very smooth.

For the summer - I have my 8-12 hour slow drip machine. It's incredibly smooth and is delicious cold or can even be reheated as there is no bitterness whatsoever. I usually make that with ice cubes which then melt and drip.

Some advice please.

Ive got a filter coffee machine. Its nice enough but the coffee it produces is pure black.

When you get a coffee (espresso or americano) from somewhere, usually a posh place, the coffee has a golden tint/froth to it. How do you get that?

Is it the coffee itself or how it is being made?

Espresso has the tint or 'crema'
Filter coffee doesn't tend to.

Having concluded my girlfriend forgot to pack our Gaggia when we moved house, we've replaced it with a Dolce Gusto pod machine.

Fills that 1-cup gap our filter machine isn't good for, and is a lot less stress and mess than the Gaggia was. A few niggles with serving size and temperature aside, it's pretty great. The quality of my morning coffee is higher than it was now for sure

This is pretty much the truth. I would recommend the model below as a good entry level model, it's what I have and I've recommended it before:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/DeLonghi-EC155 ... B000F49XXG

However, if you're on a budget that doesn't stretch to new hardware I'd recommend the very finely ground instant espresso coffees. Nescafe Espresso powder and their Azera brand both give an okay crema for instant coffee (pour the water out of the kettle very slowly to avoid disturbing it). Azera is my current instant coffee. Before I get a thread ban, this is not as good as doing it properly, but it achieves what you would like, i.e. a crema, at a price far below even the cheaper machines.

Looks like you could pump a thick, creamy, shot of latte out with that thing.
