Currently Im managing 4.5 miles in just under 30 minutes, as I have nothing to gauge this against, I think its quite a decent time. Ive been training for two weeks, I try to run 3 times a week and I need to start swimming. For someone who is so thin..is there any chance that I might put some weight on by doing this.

Im running a marathon in April next year, so you are all going to sponsor me to. :shifty:

Sorry to say, but there is no way you will put on weight while distance training, and if anything you will lose weight. If you want to put on weight then you will have to focus on weight training and reduce the cardio. If you want to achieve a quick running pace, then you don't want to be carrying that extra muscle

I may have worded it incorrectly, the "fat" I currently carry, should turn to muscle yes? Around my legs, waist and whatnot. I currently weigh 10 stone and im about 5ft 10"

As for the time, yeah I thought it was decent poser. No way Im gonna manage it for 26 miles, but my aim is to build my stamina first over 4-5 miles that I can run without really getting too knackered because currently even though I can keep going Im strawberry floated when I get in.

Ive been reading the guides someone linked me too and I need to invest in some sugary treats I believe for when I start to run longer distances

TBH that is a good time, I'm doing something similar distance wise at about 8 minutes per mile - my excuse is I'm old(ish),my knees hurt , I've dodgy ankles from football, it's a strong headwind etc!

To increase muscles you'd really need to be doing weights as mentioned but to get extra power try and sprint-(or as close as you can get withought using up all your reserves) on any uphill sections, kinda obvious but I've noticed slight gains in the amount of muscle on my legs as well. Conversely - mountain runners say that you're better off expending your energy on the downhill sections becasue you get a much greater increase in pace whereas the energy on an uphill section doesn't gain a significant enough advantage.

And I swear by a banana about an hour before a run, slow release energy that always keeps me going.

A lot of that is probably captian obvious talking.

Im old too. :P

Dont eat fruit and I aint gonna start now..any other ideas for what i can eat just before I run?

Thats what Im looking for muscle wise, for my legs to not be as flabby. :fp:

I cant see how sprinting has any benefits if Im honest as Im not going to sprint at any point during the run.

As per my reply yesterday, jaffa cakes and jelly babies. Seriously. If you do a google search there's loads of stuff, but my old sprint training group at Gateshead Harriers used to raid the vending machines at the stadium during and after every session.

People think "sweets=bad", but if you're doing shitloads of running, your body can not only cope with it, but needs it.

I'm a fat bastard whose clearly gone in right over his head here, and I have a shade under five months to prepare for this(I'd like to do it in under 2hrs 30 if possible). Also I have a chocolate ankle - one of the reasons I'm so bloody unfit is that every time I start to get going I injure the strawberry floating thing. Anyone got any tips on how I should start without jogging myself into a coma after thirty seconds?

How is your training going dude?

Glowy, you need to get some proper running shoes if you're serious about running.

Well worth visiting your local dedicated running store for some advice. You can always note the model they recommend and buy cheaper online but I prefer to give them the sale for their advice and then buy subsequent pairs online.

I do go through at least 2 pairs a year at the moment and don't want to pay full whack each time.

Howdy gents.

Some advice, Ive been looking to get some stuff for my running, socks trainers and the like. I went to the Sutton Runner, as shop in suttin the other day and to say the service there was strawberry floating abysmal is an understatment. For a bloke that works in retail I was horrified. I needed advice and the guy wasnt interested.

Anyway, Ive got some Nike pegasus trainers. I need some socks and running legging/shorts or whatever, any ideas for what Im looking for.

Ta.

Hey guys, just been on my second run and can already noticed an improvement in my cardio, would have kept going tonight if it wasn't for on thing. My right shin area is killing, it's aching when I'm running after a certain amount of time. Is there any way to counter this? Is it a case of my right leg isn't used to running? That came out a little weird

And they probably won't be as flabby, it just won't be because you put on any muscle. Chances are, you'll lose some muscle. Distance running and swimming three times a week is not the way to put on weight.

And fat doesn't turn into muscle. :)

What kind of shoes are you using? I found that when I started running I got the same pains you're describing - I got a pair of padded running shoes and it's sorted the problem out completely.

Yeah, tha's what I have... I didn't pay the best price for them so it's probably not helping. May try and get some extra padding, thanks DP!

I'm hoping to start running again this week, first time since May because of illness. I'm noticably lacking in stamina from before I fell ill, even in day to day life, but I don't want to put off running for too much longer. I really don't know what I can manage, so I'm kinda worries about it. I had come a long way this year with my fitness, and I've dropped over 4 stone, but failing miserably and realising just how much the last few months has cost me is going to be hard. :(

Currently doing a route that Walkjogrun has as 5.17km three times a week. Nothing too crazy, should probably bump it up seeing as I did double that three times a week in the summer.

All you can do buddy is get out there and try again. It would be so much easier to do nothing but you want to do something about it which is great. As long as you're feeling better just try and see how you go. If it was anything like me the other week it's going to be painful  That initial start is always the hardest. Just take it steady and go out your own pace, it may feel like your starting again but you'll soon get into the stride with things

Let us know how you get on

Well, I did it. First time running since the incident. strawberry float me, I'm done in. Five minutes of running and I feel physically sick, and my lungs ache. I wouldn't say I was any worse than I was when fat bastard me started this up, but it never hurt this much. I always knew it would be a long road back. At least I've taken the first step now. :(

The good news is that I managed to set a new 10k PB of 44.10 in a local 10k race.

The bad news is that I didn't make the London Marathon ballot :(

In other news, I'll be taking part in the Longmynd Hike this weekend (50 mile hike over Shropshire through the night). Waterproofs are packed!
