The steam sale has helped me clear a few more letters.

Don't worry, I got this and thought it was funny.

Though as Stewart Lee once opined, in some ways, one person laughing is worse than no-one laughing.

Saw you've been playing Norco and Pseudoregalia so I assume you've been talking advantage of the same Humble Bundles as I have.

I've got so many new games to start, it's unreal.

I just clapped and nodded in liberal agreement

I just bought them in the Steam sale like a chump.

Just finished Industria. Reminded me of playing a HL2 mod from 2007, but in a good way.

Where do we all stand on things like ROM hacks and fan expansions?

I'm playing a lot of Doom (1993) fan MegaWADs at the moment (essentially full 30 level campaigns built in the OG Doom engine) so am planning to add those to my list.

Similarly I've been playing a community ROM hack of Super Mario Sunshine at the moment called Super Mario Sunburn (which I highly recommend by the way, adds some real nice quality of life changes to the game that make it so much nicer to play!).

Anyone object to things like this being on the list? In the spirit of "playing new things" the latter probably only really counts if you've never played Sunshine before I guess.

I feel those would fall under the same reasonings you have to take with DLC. Which for me is a simple thing. If it's a separate thing from the base game modes, it is its own thing. Same for if its a separate story of significant length. So yeah, those Doom fangames would count, as they would essentially be new experiences. As you say, Super Mario Sunburn would only count if you've never played Sunshine.

I'd argue Sunburn should count under the same sort of concept where we're allowing ourselves to put in remakes of games we've played in the past.

Good point, you should need to play all fan mods in order to mark a game as truly complete.

I think it's probably stretching it a bit, but remakes and remasters in their various guises definitely do muddy the waters!

I think it's up to the individual to decide (and the rest of us to pass judgement), but to me it seems clear that The Last of Us Remastered definitely shouldn't class as a separate game, while the Resident Evil series remakes definitely should. It sounds like Sunburn is closer to the former.

To be fair Mockmaster says remasters are fine.

i think a romhack counts - for example we would probably consider pokemon ruby and sapphire as seperate games despite them being fundamentally the same aside from encounters and possible battles etc, so i would be happy to accept that emerald kaizo is a different game to emerald

a doom wad doesnt count unless its a total conversion - otherwise its just a level pack

I was going to ask this question about Portal Revolution when I got around to playing it.

I agree with this.
