I'm gonna try and do some nice updates running up to the contest, whilst I go about finding some new blood for the contest as well.

Over the next few days - I'm gonna post about the previous contests, and the great history and lore that has been built up through this little contests past.

Image

The first contest arose whilst I was bored staying in halls accomdation at University. I had a month running over beyond the end of my Uni term, but wasn't quite ready to go home, but at the same time few were sticking around. At the time, I was really enjoying MHTL's output on Gamesradar, but also was starting to notice how forum 'celebrities' rarely actually included thoe who contributed the most to GRCade in regards threads and input. I will say for the record that Dav2k was the direct inspiration for the contest. I wanted to show these passionate gamers in a different light, and felt they needed to be celebrated. In later years I would consider doing a 'Football Guru' - but this was abandoned because I just don't like it when footy fans act as 'knowitalls', something I didn't think was so much an issue with the gamers.

I put out the call for contestants and I was pleased to recieve a lot of interest for an unknown contest done by at that point almost a complete newbie, who just a year prior had been told to 'piss off' by now seemingly mild mannered zebra Stu! The contest was done on an audition basis and of the 18-19 people who put their name forward - ten were chosen. The biggest names were by far Foolish Mortal, Thanatos, tnman and the aformentioned Dav2k making his bow. The first contest included a great mix of newbies and regulars, the like of The Other One, Dodgy Dave, being joined by the likes of invincible and mad_dwarfer.

The very first task was about reviving an old franchise, in which two players were to be eliminated. The players quickly discovered how punishing the contest could be, and straight away Thanatos and starfox were dispatched, despite a poor performance from Foolish Mortal. Very quickly four players lodged themselves as the top four, and they later would be named 'The Elite Four' being practically the top four in every task approaching the final. The first ever task was won by an unfamiliar Nintendo fan using a shy-guy avatar by the name of Invincible.

The second round saw a head-to-head round between Foolish Mortal and The Other One, and yet again up until the elimination it seemed FM was destined to go, but he would yet again survive as he dispatched the unpopular The Other One in the elimination head-to-head. However, come Round 3 - Foolish Mortal would finally succumb and be the fourth contestant to bow out of the competiton.

The 'Elite Four' had has asserted themselves at the top - Dav2k the popular games chat dweller, dodgy_dave, relative newbie Mailman and invincible. tnman following on their coat-tails finishing fifth in every task to that point.

Then a bombshell that rocked the competition - the very first 'DML Twist'. I had sneakily kept a contestant back to be unleashed at this point, a name to the forum every bit as big as Dav2k - and every much as a threat to the title - toxic strode into the arena, and sent invincible into an unbelievable rage. Invincible messaged me on MSN and called me a f*** no less then twenty times in a row. We talked it out and I asked him if he wanted to leave the contest. Although still unhappy, I relented and let him stay.

Toxic would survive for a bit, but would then be swept away in the first ever showing of the 'Polls of Doom' which for a few years would become the contests blue riband event and much feared as the curveball that could end anyones dreams. Eventually we were down to those same five contestants who had been consistent, and the pressure clearly was getting to tnman - could he finally overcome these Elite Four in a task to survive elimination. The answer was no. Finally we were down to four, but one had to go before the final, and they were almost impossible to split. The clever money may have been on Mailman, but eventually it was dodgy_dave who bowed out with no shame to come fourth.

The first live task and a great prospect, Dav2k would take on two bright newbies for the title. Dav2k would quickly show his quickfire skills were not quite the same as his compatriots and after a great debut he finished third, leaving the other two to fight it out. It went down to the very final question - but at the end - invincible emerged victorious over Mailman to become the first Games Guru. Noticibly emotional on winning the contest he has badly wanted to win, he went on to promote the contest much to my delight and we had a highly memorable first contest....which would return for a sequel just six months later...

If those peeps who know they are going to audition can get their auditions in sooner rather then later, it will give me a good idea what I need more of, whether its regulars or whether its new blood. This would be really helpful!

That said, a couple more applications this morning, so it is starting to shape up!

Hot on the heels of the inaugral Games Guru competition, there was much want for a second contest just weeks after the contest. Eventually six months later - the second competition was put together, and 'GGGC2: Champions And Challengers' was launched - the idea being to put experiences players against new players. A sister competition and satellite into the Main Event 'Do You Guru' was played out for the first time - and was a contest purely designed to allow rookies a free shot at spaces without any of those pesky regulars getting in the way. Six played the tournament, and Cora and jeebus became the lucky two to win spots through this method.

Plenty others joined them afterwards, including defending Guru Invincible, a second outing for Dav2k, tnman and toxic as well. Amongst the new blood was Santa avatared and formerly big name on the forum r_0_s_s_c_0, debuts for players who would later have a big impact on the contest - the young Falcon, and SCHMUP fan plasticcoated.

The contest started with an enormous amount of contraversy. In the first round, a creative challenge was the subject - and two players finished in the bottom two - tnman and Rossco - and faced a vote off However in actuality, tnman and Falcon has been the bottom two, and Rossco was as high as fifth. Why was this the case? A new player called Sizzle_Steel - a friend of mine who lived just down the road from me acted as a GGGC Mole, and could choose who the second was to face the vote. None the wiser, Rossco was voted off, and tnman who had barely had any votes in the intial vote lived to fight another day, eventually finishing fifth again. The players eventually found out about the existence of a Mole after Task Two, and Sizzle Steel was ousted come Task 3.

The other big contraversy surrounded GGGC's first real shock - with peoples champion Dav2k getting eliminated in the second task - a huge shock. It was a big shift in the contest, and the first time in the contests history that a baton genuineely felt was being passed from an older generation to a newer one.

Omo came in as the second 'suprise' contestant, and despite being a bit out of his depth scraped through a couple of challenges. Toxic also succumbed to the Polls of Doom for a second time, much to his frustration as he and the Random Fury gang had been working together as a team behind the scenes, a fact only gloated many years later.

The finalists ended up being the highly impressive rinks, who had acted as the contest's 'superfan' during the first contest, and looked like the most likely person to end Vinces reign of terror, a much less popular character having let victory go to his head a little bit. The other finalist alongside Vince and rinks was Belgian new boy jeebus who had written the best creative piece probably seen in the contest to date.

The quickfire nature was a bit much for jeebus, and he bowed out in second, and yet again another extremely close final took place - blow for blow, but at the end of it - invincible once again ruled supreme in what seemed an unlikely double. rinks earned the respect of the forum, and me and Invincible talked privately about how he would become a 'Forever Guru' if he could take down a third title...

...however that third title would not be forthcoming...
