What did you think of Greece's Euro 2004 win out of interest, Ginga?

Utterly undeserved. Footballing Judas's. Should be hanged with Barcelona, Ajax and Brazil 1970 in attendance.

Good game, was very pleased to see Chelsea win, especially for Lamps, DDA and RDM. Thought it was pretty shameful of Torres not to step up for a penalty, especially if Cahill was 6th! But then Munich pussied out so much they made Neuer step up

3 different English sides winning the CL in 8 years, 5th (?) English side to win it overall, more than any other country (?). Class 8-)

Also an English team in 7 of the last eight finals. Two in 2008.

I'm surprised that so many adults don't know the definition of "deserve".

deserve
v deserve [diˈzəːv]
to have earned as a right by one's actions; to be worthy of He deserves recognition of his achievements.
adj deˈserving
(negativeundeserving)
1 worthy or suitable (to be given charity etc) I only give money to deserving causes.
2 (withof) worthy of He is deserving of better treatment than this.

The entire word means to receive an outcome worthy of the input. You can call it what you want, romanticise it all the same, but Chelsea did not "deserve" to beat Barcelona, nevermind Bayern. You can't say they were "lucky" and also that they "deserved" it. That's a contradiction.

And Greece were strawberry floating awful and that win did nothing for the country, like that type of football never does - it's a win at all costs mentality. I could understand, slightly, with a poor Greece team but where would they go from there? It didn't prove anything other than minimising contact with the actual ball could ensure technically inefficient players could strangle the game via other means.

Chelsea are a better team than Greece ever were, I'm just puzzled that people think that's the only way they could have won this competition - Barcelona were well beaten when Real took the game to them, Bayern were utterly thumped last week when Dortmund pressed the issue. I realise injuries and suspensions play a part in tactics but I don't think the game plan would have been any different with different players? It's a like-for-like approach.

Chelsea deserved it for their spirit and hard work. Most teams would have collapsed if they had their right back as CB against Barcelona with 10 men. They hung on and got the draw too.

They were up against it today. Playing Bayern in a final is going to be tough, but playing them in their own backyard is going to be even tougher.

I can understand the point Ginga is making. Chelsea have spent a lot of money and they playing like that, but it's up to them how they want to play.

I think Chelsea Football Club deserve recognition for their achievement in winning the UEFA Champions League.

Look up the definition of win while you're at it.

Bayern's 'actions' were to be gooseberry fool in front of goal, miss a penalty in normal time, fail to capitalise on their dominance and lose a penalty shoot-out from a commanding position. Oh, they deserved it.

So you think tactical nous and defensive stability aren't worth 'inputs'?

Doesn't exactly hide the fact English sides did horribly on both competitions this year. That kind of dominance a few years ago is obviously dead and next season should be very interesting with teams like Dortmund and Juventus adding to the Champions League mix. Like I said earlier too, the Europa League could also be better than expected.

to succeed in reaching (a place, condition, etc.), especially by great effort:
5. to get by effort, as through labor, competition, or conquest: He won his post after years of striving.
6. to gain (a prize, fame, etc.).
7. to be successful in (a game, battle, etc.).
8. to make (one's way), as by effort or ability.

How is it dead?

Our top two underperformed - no question

But our sixth placed team did better than the best of Spain and Germany et al.

Ultimately the only thing you can do is maximise your chance of winning the match. This is done thru preventing the other team from creating chances and creation of chances for yourself to score. But even if you do both these things, in football you can still lose. I find it helps if you think about it like this because you get away from subjective terminology such as "deserve".

I don't believe Chelsea maximised their chances of winning the game against either Barca or Bayern, but they won anyway. Sometimes this happens.

I agree with Ginga that they didn't even defend that well!

English football has been getting weaker defensively, other clubs are getting stronger. We're not going to see that kind of dominance again I don't think.
