Since Michael Owen left, I think his number seven shirt should goes to Antonio Valencia for the new season and he deserved it, in my opinion. 8-)

I'm surprised they haven't retired the number on his leaving.

3 6th place finishes in a row for a club like Villa was a good achievement, remind me where the positions they've finished since? Regardless of Glowy's opinion of him its a fact they've got worse since he left.

Because he strawberry floated our club over financially. :fp:

Not sure what to think about this. Its probably bullshit so I won't bother figuring it out.

Aston Villa are attempting to avoid paying compensation for Norwich City manager Paul Lambert - because they believe there is a clause in the Scot's contract allowing him to talk to interested parties in the Premier League if the Norfolk club are approached.

Or its because they haven't got any money and this £50million war chest Glowy likes to bang on about doesn't exist.

Wrong 8-)

I love Tonio but I would love to give it some up and coming player to try and inspire them to greater things ... it's funny what a shirt can do for you. Imagine giving it to Celverly now, the amount of belief that would give the kid would be incredible.

I had no problem with Owen joining us when he did but I' never condoned him wearing that shirt. It used to really bother me.

Nah, up and coming players should aspire to wear a number with such 'history'.

Giving it to a big name signing or even handing it to a youngster are both acceptable options for the number 7 shirt. Ditto it being given to Valencia.

As for Owen getting it, I didn't mind it as it took away the commercial/exploitative aspect of the number. But I think the time is now right for someone worthy to wear it again.

Correct. You could compare with those players who did wear the No.7 shirt and see the difference.

George Best
Eric Cantona
David Beckham
Cristiano Ronaldo
Michael Owen

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great for Michael Owen to get the No.7 shirt, but I'd say he was probably at least to show the worthy to wear the shirt out of those players in the past. We need to give a player the No.7 shirt to show that we have the key player who wears it in our squad, in my opinion.

People seem to forget that Michael Owen is a Ballon d'Or winner. Not like it was a nobody.

Also what kanbei said

Owen should go down as a footballing legend, if it wasnt for injuries, teams would have been fighting over his signature
