I watch a few Japanese youtubers and Trash Taste; but even when watching I find myself recoiling sometimes at how clearly out of touch with reality these people are now. I tried watching some big streamers at one point and when I started to realise these people were making more in donations in a day than I made in a year it just made me feel awful.

I think this is a huge reason why I lose interest in the bigger youtubers. The love in what they are doing just dies as it becomes a day job. It can also be weird watching the general behaviour of the audience. It can sometimes feel exploitative and a bit cultish.

Welcome to capitalism. We were having a discussion about this the other day, since the internet has become widely more accessible and used on phones and such it’s just become so commercial/fiscal based.

Of course money was always being made, those of us that remember it in the 90’s and such will confirm that but even as recently as 2007-9 I don’t recall it being this exploitive or obsessed with ads, clicks and such.

YouTube used to be great, then Google got it and it became all about ad revenue which changed the way vlogs, bloggers did their videos to maximise their own income or careers.

The same way anytime an app comes out or new social platform it evidently rushes 100% to make money out of you or adverts. It’s destroyed local newspapers online with Reachmedia isn’t? No idea how anyone reads those articles with about 20’ads in them

1) popular YouTuber (The Completionist) starts a charity venture
2) events are held by said YouTuber and his team over the course of years, where viewers are encouraged to donate
3) the money is yet to be donated and currently totals some $665k just sitting in a bank account
4) when asked to comment, The Completionist claimed he only learnt the money hadn't been donated in 2022
5) money still hasn't been donated, The Completionist still professes on his streams to have donated money to all the causes that he previously claimed to

Thank you!

So the guy can be earning a nice bit of interest on all that money then :|

Actually not a bad idea to boost charity funds tbf. Provided it all goes to charity eventually

Don't know if that's actually beneficial due to dollars being worth less now. Maybe someone with actual maths skills can tell us.

Just on this point - YouTube has pretty much always been owned by Google, it launched in '05 and they acquired it in '06.

Not saying Google hasn't had an effect on how the service operates, but 99% of people's memories of YouTube are of eras when it has been under Google operation

strawberry floating nuts to think we all witnessed the dawn of something like YouTube. We're so old. I remember going to stupidvideos.com every night after school, before YouTube was even close to being a thing.

I can remember the dawn of DVD and people saying it was pointless as we all had VHS players.

YouTube/streaming is all new fangled nonsense as far as I'm concerned.

This is enshittification: surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then once they're locked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of gooseberry fool. From mobile app stores to Steam, from Facebook to Twitter, this is the enshittification lifecycle.

https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/pote ... /#hey-guys

Youtube is obviously long way down the enshittification pipeline, given how long it's been about, but it's really amazing to look now at just how quickly new platforms accelerate down this route as the process has become refined and streamlined over the years. Every "disruptive" tech start up is following this model, and it's leaving us with an Internet that is ever shittier.

It's just like the history of television.

TV: You start off with the BBC and no adverts.
Internet: You start off with newsgroups and no adverts

TV: And then you end up with Babestation, GB News and Ant & Dec. With a fuckload of adverts.
Internet: And then you end up with Pornhub, fascism and annoying YouTubers. With a fuckload of adverts.

I remember that too. I remember dragging my mum from shop to shop to try and find a copy of The Matrix on VHS as we didn't have a DVD player yet and I remember The Matrix being a big part of the DVD marketing campaign.

Our first ever DVD was the Robbie Williams 'Rock DJ' music video

My first DVD was Demolition Man, I only bought it as I had just bought my first PC and it had a DVD drive I wanted to test out.

That PC had a whopping 11gb hard drive. I remember the bloke in the shop telling me that 11gb would be enough for anything I ever wanted to save.

Oh god

My first DVD was the matrix (already had it on VHS) and at the same time my mum bought me gladiator. I took my new massive DVD player downstairs that night and we all watched it on the big CRT tv in the living room. We were entertained.
