The Beatles - Now And Then

Was going to put this in the Currently Listening thread, but figured it probably deserved its own thread.

Now and Then's eventful journey to fruition took place over five decades and is the product of conversations and collaborations between the four Beatles that go on to this day. The long mythologised John Lennon demo was first worked on in February 1995 by Paul, George and Ringo as part of The Beatles Anthology project but it remained unfinished, partly because of the impossible technological challenges involved in working with the vocal John had recorded on tape in the 1970s. For years it looked like the song could never be completed. But in 2022 there was a stroke of serendipity. A software system developed by Peter Jackson and his team, used throughout the production of the documentary series Get Back, finally opened the way for the uncoupling of John’s vocal from his piano part. As a result, the original recording could be brought to life and worked on anew with contributions from all four Beatles. This remarkable story of musical archaeology reflects The Beatles’ endless creative curiosity and shared fascination with technology. It marks the completion of the last recording that John, Paul and George and Ringo will get to make together and celebrates the legacy of the foremost and most influential band in popular music history.

Too early to say for sure how it holds up in the long run, but I think I like it.

I like a lot of the Beatles back catalogue, but I'm sorry to say I thought this was a bit naff.
Which is kind of what you'd expect from lots of different recordings over lots of different time periods that are sewn together to be like really.

I like it, they've done a really good job of putting it together all things considered.

I think it's a good song. I don't know if it's one I'll come back to a lot but I enjoyed it on first listen.

I've listened a few times and I really like it.

It's not going to ever be thought of as their greatest song or anything. But they've done a great job to get a rough cassette demo sounding like that.

I enjoyed listening to it but I think I much prefer the last two songs Free as a Bird and Real Love, I guess I will need to listen a few more times and see how much of a desire to return to it I have.

I like it, but it's a very sad feeling song which is not what I really like out of a Beatles song. It's like Julia is a beautiful song, but it really gets me down.

Nothing is topping Real Love though, what a great tune and a belting Harrison solo to boot

It's pretty good but the sad thing is it just hints at something that could probably have been way better if they'd worked on it all together properly

I only learned recently that they were planning a proper reunion just before Lennon got shot. What could have been.

We went to Liverpool a few weeks ago (second time we've been) and did most of the Beatles stuff again. Standing outside their houses is really strange, they're just old houses but to imaging these almost mythical people being there and writing these amazing tunes is pretty cool.

It's a nice enough song, more than listenable and they've done a good job with it. Nothing more than that but also, probably the best it was could ever be realistically.

It's the dissonant vocals that kind of mars it for me, feels like they could have done a better job with the mix there

Not bad at all! A worthy addition to the overpriced blue (I guess) album.

I lived and worked in Liverpool for about seven years. Never went to the Beatles' museum, but I did get drunk on Mathew Street a few times.

Edit: fixed apostrophe (in case Eighthours is watching).

Like when the Monkees 'reformed'? 'Now and then' reminded me of this...

We went to the Beatles museum and I wouldn't really recommend it. It starts out on the first floor being really interesting and taking you through in a proper chronological order of the formation up and through hamburg, then on the other floors it's just like here's some random gooseberry fool kind of related to the Beatles. Guitars that are not anything owned and played by them, just a similar model they've got, lots of pictures of album covers and so on. By the last floor where its the final years its just yellow submarine toys and that sort of thing. It's a shame as if it all had the story thread that the first floor had, then it would have been amazing.
