Any idea on merits of quality/performance modes on PS5

The game has got super reviews pretty much across the board, with a score of 86 after 86 reviews on PS5.

I'm intrigued, though, by ACG (game reviewer) and John Linneman (Digital Foundry) indicating that technically there are some seemingly big issues with the game. From a quick look at review summaries, few others seem to be mentioning this aspect.

Edit: There seems to be lots of differing opinions on the tech aspects; plenty of folk are saying that once the latest patch is downloaded, performance is much better.

Maybe these issues will appear later, but I didn't notice any issues on PC....so far.

'overlook all these bugs, they'll be fixed in time for release'

I guess because game production can now go right to the wire before releasing (with this attitude of 'oh, we'll fix it after it's launched'), many game reviews seem to be in the exact same position they were throughout the 90s and 00s when exclusive reviews had to be carried out weeks if not months in advance, resulting in blatantly unfinished products being tested. The alternative is to review the game post-launch, but websites don't like doing that.

Interestingly this game can't be shared via Steam Family Share (or whatever that's called).

I've not seen that before. Another negative against the PC version. A shame.

A lot of games are excluded from family share. EA, Activision, Rockstar all do it, it would be nice for them to allow it but lets be honest that will never happen.

https://steamdb.info

They even have it listed in the game info if it is restricted.

Well, had a lot of fun with this across these first few hours with it. A very lovely opening planet, with plenty of action to get stuck into. Then to the second, which is where I ended things after having a bit of an explore. A definite improvement on Fallen Order.

Playing on Series X. Loving it so far, the story is really, really interesting. It fits in with the cinematic Canon really well, as did the first game. A few gripes with the platforming sections being a bit hit and miss in the usual EA flaws way, and also the map is still horrendous. I know they have made the map "canon" but it is really horrible to navigate. I say this as someone who has recently started yet another playthrough of Skyrim which has one of the worst maps I know.

Other than that I've loved it. I'm someone who thought Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi Academy were amongst the best "Jedi" games, but this is probably how 14 year old me would imagine Star Wars games in my 30s. I'm genuinely impressed at how they have kind of made it much more open world.

I'm still calling for a proper current gen remaster (without Battlefront engine) of Tie Fighter though. I've been watching Mando with my son/padawan and I've been telling him how I served with Vice Admiral Thrawn back in the day.

Also, I don't usually go for pre-orders but the hermit costume is just..... :datass:

Edit: I'm not too far in really but got to what I would call an Arkham Asylum scarecrow trial. I'm strawberry floating terrible but not like I'm a rookie. Died about 9 times and rage quit. But I honestly swear I was nailed about 6 times at least because the red wall thing didn't recognise I was the other side of it. It reminded me of some of those terrible 16bit platformers where the collision detection was broken!

Well, I've given in to the hype and ordered the game. I'll get into the prequel audiobook when I'm done with Doctor Aphra, shortly. I don't think I need to replay the first game, it's a lot to go through and with games like that, I have difficulty replaying and dedicating time to after I've gone through it to my satisfaction the first time(s). If I try, my attention wanders part way in.

In terms of consoles, which version is generally regarded as better at the moment? PS5 or Series X?

Performance wise this is still top notch on the PS5. Had one hard crash though.

So far I kinda prefer the first game. Its much more tighter metriodvania game in that, and the open world nature in the sequel kinda took that tighter side away. I'm just wandering all over the place and bump into major story line quest by chance.

Digital foundry have pulled no punches. ‘Shouldn’t be sold in current condition’, ‘lousy’ and ‘worst pc port this year!’.

Makes a mockery of the EA post blaming CPUs.

Xbox series X. Ive got it on "performance mode" but at first it seems a bit choppy. Not out of the first area and ive had one hard crash.

This is ever so lovely. The story and character interactions are as great as Fallen Order, and they are not pulling any punches with those set pieces. The major story beat I left things on had... well, let's just say a playable Michael Bay escape scene. It was awesome! I'm loving exploring these locations, finding what lies within a side path. They look so beautiful! This beats Fallen Order already, for me. I might not be the best at combat, sometimes getting easily overwhelmed with just a few enemies, but I'm having a massive amount of fun with it.

I've noticed this is already falling in price pretty rapidly. On eBay the Deluxe edition is down to £60 on Xbox Series and £70 on PS5.

I really have not noticed much stuttering other than going in to a new area which lasts a second. I have had 1 crash since I started playing.

The visuals are so nice and starting the game with all the skills from Fallen Order was nice. The map is still a dire piece of shite though.
