I've not played much Stellaris, but yeah this is REALLY Stellaris with a slight reskin - but it's also bare bones and buggy as strawberry float.

There's no recognisable music/SFX (maybe a rights issue)

Chronologically is all over the place. e.g. you get Intrepid before Excelsiors, you can recruit anyone at anytime time due to RNG, all little things but if you're playing for "THE STAR TREK FEEL" might matter to you.

Some of the shoe horning into Stellaris mechanics don't make a great deal of sense (my Data died of old age at 90. Because that's what the NPCs do)

There's no customisation of victory conditions and there's only 1 map with the 4 factions on. (The rest of the galaxy other than starting locations is then randomly shuffled about). So you couldn't say, do a small quick Klingon/Fed death match.

This is a shame. Stellaris has been out for a few years so you'd expect most things to work out of the box as it's not a new engine or anything. I'm going to give it a go this weekend but it might be a wait for a patch job long term. IGN said the bugs have actually got worse from the preview copy! Can't be dealing with a grand strategy game that will leave a ten hour save dead in the water...

It might be one to watch for a patched version and the X DLC packs (Dominion, Borg, other factions etc)

As I said earlier the Mirror Universe would be a great expansion and I don't think it's ever been included in a game. Also just having a random map game would be an easy lifespan-extender.

I might have not been clear. The starting 4 always start in the same locations relative to each other and with the same starting worlds (I think), the rest of the map is randomised (I think always from the same selection, so you will always have Trill, Bolians etc just the locations change)

Yeah I know there is some random nature to minor star systems but I mean a full randomised map so when you've had your fill of "canon" games as you outline above you can just play in a more regular 4X way. It would probably be better with more than four major factions for that mode though.

In the level where you're running through a TOS era ship in that ship graveyard thing? That's the Prime universe with MU stuff in it, not the MU.

I stopped playing EF because it got to a bit with Species 8472 and I haven't seen up to that part of Voyager yet so I want to get through that bit of the series first.

Fair enough! I haven't gone anywhere near ST:O because in my head MMORPGs are all crap unless you put in thirty hours a week. My friend has just resigned as admiral of a fleet in the mobile game that's out at the moment (Fleet Command?) because it was just taking over her life!

I don't do anime or manga so I construed it as absolutely brutal sarcasm :slol: - Shattered Universe proves me wrong about the MU anyway!

I played a bit of this today. I don't know whether the ship design button is broken for me or its just locked until a set point of the tutorial. I found a similar thing with Stellaris that they'll just throw dialogue boxes at you while you're in the middle of another task - it's really confusing if you're new!

I've played it on and off for years and it's the least egregious MMO i've played in that regard; the main narrative plays out in an episodic format, is completely free, there's loads of it now. It has all the trappings of lootboxes etc and unless you really get into wanting to fly a specific ship from a specific series/episode then it gets silly money, as is the way with these things. I have definitely paid to win in the past, and there are a couple of things that are worth buying with real money which are one-off quality of life improvements, but you can absolutely just play through it with the ships you get from levelling up. The fleets in this are also an extra thing you can join, contribute resources to then buy better gear, and of course reputations to fill up to get better gear, that kind of thing.

I hadn't played it for a while but go back to it when they finish a new set of "episodes" and don't have time to do all the FOMO limited event things, which are definitely not necessary. Happy to explain more via PM etc.

Star Trek Online is a great single player experience, and they've had quite a few of the cast do voice lines. The ground combat is utter bobbins, but the space combat can be pretty fun and the plot lines are very good and expand on a ton of stuff from the various shows.

You can even have the option if starting out as being from TOS or Discovery era Starfleet (assuming you choose Federation as your faction)

It's absolutely possible (and easy) to experience all the story content without spending a single penny or having to do a bunch of grinding. Infact the only grinding in the game is from the event stuff, going through the story alone will keep you at the right level to continually progress.
