‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Mayans Spinoff At FX Gets Title & Enters Development; Elgin James Joins Kurt Sutter As Co-Creator

FX Networks has begun formal script development on the long-rumored Mayans spinoff series from Kurt Sutter’s hit biker drama Sons of Anarchy. The offshoot, titled Mayans MC, will be co-created by Sutter and Elgin James (Little Birds), with James writing the pilot script and both producing. SOA studios Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions are back for Mayans MC.

In the spirit of Sons of Anarchy, Mayans MC will be a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens, per FX.

“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” New Jersey-born Sutter said. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”

FX has picked up to series Mayans MC, Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy spinoff, with a 10-episode order for a 2018 premiere. The announcement was made today at TCA.

The series order comes after the pilot underwent a reshoot and recasting of some key roles. FX CEO John Landgraf expressed optimism for the future of the spinoff at last summer’s TCA, saying that he expected a pickup in about three months.

Mayans MC is set in a post-Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes (JD Pardo), fresh out of prison, is a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now EZ must carve out his new outlaw identity in a town where he once was the golden boy who had the American Dream within his grasp.

Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo and Carla Baratta also star.

The series is set for a world premiere sneak peek June 8 at the ATX Television Festival in Austin before its FX premiere in the fall.
