More news reports on the lovely Govanhill

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10574710

When Ms Hannah turned to walk away, Adam stabbed her in the back.

The attack continued in a nearby shop which Ms Hannah had staggered into.

Adam eventually dropped the knife and fled after being kicked by a customer.

The court heard how Ms Hannah suffered 11 stab wounds, which punctured a lung and sliced through her liver.

When Adam, from the city's Govanhill area, was arrested the following day she bit a police officer on the leg.

Hugh Doherty, 59 - linked to 16 IRA murders - came from Toryglen in the city, while Brighton bomber Patrick Magee, 59, was arrested at a safe house in nearby Govanhill.

Glasgow’s murder rate of five people in every 100,000 makes it the most dangerous city in western Europe.

Yet within this square mile lurks an unenviable distinction: in the European murder capital of Glasgow, it stands out as having the highest rate of killings. In the past six years, its 8,500 residents have seen 11 murders take place on their doorstep. With one murder per 4,644 people annually, its rate is five times higher than in the city and more than 12 times the average in Scotland.

Last year the murder rate grew faster than any other country in western Europe and was the sixth fastest in the world, according to the latest international statistics published by the United Nations.

Right, let me get this straight in my own head. Glasgow is Europe's murder capital, and Govanhill is Glasgow's murder capital, with a murder rate five times that of the rest of the city...

strawberry float me, I am lucky I made it out of there alive. I used to stot about there out of my tree at all times of the day.

My mate still lives there though. Whenever I go back to Glasgow I stay at his place. He was telling me recently how one of his downstairs neighbours had died and the body wasn't discovered for a few months, it was the smell that alerted them to something being wrong...

Kilburn, alright though still a bit shabby - but Harlesden and Stonebridge which is the central of North Weezy (ghetto slang for North West London) are shitty areas or at least look crap.

I used to live in Newark which is lovely, except the bad areas are bad. And it's full of Gypos.

Now I'm in Mansfield, which isn't that bad these days.

The Camden Ripper lived about five minutes away from my house.

I don't buy into any of this rough town gooseberry fool. Rough areas, yeah, there are some right shitholes near the places I've lived (Hackney and Liverpool's Kensington spring to mind), but I get a bit pissed off when I hear Scousers badmouthing London as a whole, and Londoners badmouthing Liverpool, especially when they've not been to the place they're slagging off.

I've been to both, and love them both dearly.

I've also been to Birkenhead, and declare it literally the worst place in the world. It's the Mos Eisley cantina except with Giros and even more repetitive music.

That's right next to where I live, walking through there to school and back was fun.

That's funny, I live right next to here:

I'm sure that was shot by the pool outside the Roger Stevens lecture block in Leeds uni.

Every single town and city in the country / world has violent crime. Stabbings, shootings, punch ups, mindless threats etc

Assaults are by far the single most common crime reported in the uk.

It wasn't. I went for a walk the other day and found the exact spot where it was filmed.

I didn't realise that you lot were a bunch of gypsies living in all these slum-like towns, move somewhere nice and this won't be a problem for you!

I originally come from a large(ish) village about 10 miles outside of Bristol. I now live in the centre of Bristol pretty close to some of the rougher places (close to Easton and not too far from St Pauls).

Personally I saw more violence in the village than I ever do in central Bristol. There is more crime in areas like Easton, but I have never seen anything. You do hear about stabbings etc on the news but I think that is more to do with rival gangs/drug dealers. Normal people appear to be left alone as I have wandered home out of my face drunk and never had any problems. I do live on gay street though so it might explain why it is calmer.

I did see a funny fight on the weekend though. A cyclist was on the pavement (that should be a shooting offence imo) and almost clipped a very very camp bloke who was having a fag outside of the pub. The camp guy went mental and attacked the cyclist, who tried to defend himself by holding the bike up like a shield. :D Eventually the landlord of the pub came outside to defuse the situation.
