Most real sim players turn all the visual fluff gooseberry fool off. It distracts, cuts fps, and is not a real life representation.

The visual effects on Shift were incredible, though, and made the game so much more visceral than the like of Gran Turismo and Forza.

Framerate and clarity > "visceral" every time.

Did you play Shift or Shift 2? Seriously, using the in-car view, the effects were insanely good.

Racing games typically have terrible sensations of speed and, finally, a game had cracked it. Sadly, the handling was a mess. That is my only concern with this game - and it's a big one, because handling is clearly the most important factor of a racing game, particularly a sim.

You've not played a proper racing game until you've spent time with a hardcore sim, nothing like that feeling of mastering something brutally tough and knowing it was all you doing it :datass:

People calling games like gran turismo and forza sims are just :fp:

Yes I have, and they were ok in Shift, though I still turned it all off. This isnt Shift.

A replay vid of me playing Spa. Nothing spectacular, but should give those you who dont have it a good idea of what it looks like.

Max settings. In game I always have 60fps+, but youtube videos are capped at 30fps so it makes it look a lot choppier. Shadowplay seems to have trouble capturing some methods of anti aliasing as well, so it looks like I dont have any on, when in actuality I do.

Anyway, just skip through for an idea.

That looks really nice, I think PC is definitely the platform for playing that game.

Falsey, have you thought about getting a wheel setup? Sounds like you play enough driving games to warrant one and it currently looks like you're using keys (from that video anyway).

I am playing with a controller. I actually only played last night because I wanted to see how well the xbone controller worked in windows, and its actually a lot more precise feeling than the 360.

The wheels looks twitchy because thats just how CARS is at the moment, has been that way for a while with the controllers. They need to add in some gamepad filtering options, but I think its pretty low down on the priorities.

I used to have a really good wheel setup, Fanatec CSR Elite I think, but just didnt have the space to store or use it. Ill probably get another at some point.

They did the same with NFS Shift 1 & 2; was great while in development but then they gimped them before release.

We've seen absolutely nothing of the supposed Wii U version, how long until they announce that it's been canned?

I mean who would buy it on Wii U? The audience isn't attracted to driving sims, and considering how many multiplatform games that haven't been ported to Wii U that actually would've sold this just makes no sense.

So the cause of this game potentially disappointing some people is... consoles? And, specifically, the Wii U? :fp: . .

Those games didn't sell poorly on the Wii U because of the Wii U or its audience. Publishers have more than their fair share of blame by delaying or crippling the Wii U versions of most of these games.

To be fair, the game does have to be made with the lowest common denominator in mind. In this case, it's the Wii. This has happened in the past to franchises that were exclusively on PC before being developed with consoles in mind. It's the same reason why seeing cross generation games in 2015 is usually a cause for concern.

Yeah, I guess... although I feel that it's always down to the developer and the publisher. In this case it seems that some people are disappointed because the end-product isn't meeting their expecations which, I assume, have been set bythe developer.

If the game is disappointing then that's because of the choices made by Slightly Mad Studios and how they have undertaken development. If the full game is too technically advanced for the Wii U then perhaps it should be adapted into a version something like "Project Cars Arcade"; as with a few racers on the PS1 once the PS2 arrived. Games need to suit the machine, but that's down to the developer. Slightly Mad should target the best possible experience for each format - if that means adapting approaches, then so be it.

Oh, and I'm not talking about a cut-down, souless cash-in for the U! An arcade-focussed version that uilised features (Gamepad, amiibo) would be a better fit. Whilst the PC version could be simulation-focussed with damage models and suspension modifications.

Tl;dr the game should exploit the capabilities of each format. That's down to the developer and the publisher, not the target device.
