Instead of all these "reliable sources" how about Sony just give us the official number. Because so far we've had 125,000, 45,000 & now 61,000.

125k? where did that come from? the last couple seem closer to each other so that seems an outlier?

Well Jim Ryan wa sa bit over-confident saying this

"We're planning for a condition of success," PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan said. "Launch quantities will sell out - I think that's looking pretty certain."

that is for sure. Seems strange to expect that when it launches during a slump. psp came out during the debt fuelled happy days.

It surely will pick up once cheaper with sensibly priced mem cards and games and as the economy improves.

expect them to revise it down then. They always pull a figure out of their ass and then change it when the facts come out.

Strange how console launches don't seem to tie in with anything. You'd think manufacturers would launch in the UK close to Christmas, say November. But for some reason end of Feb seemed better.....

Yes?

I'm assuming they had to get it out this financial year and ahead of the iPad 3 launch.

Plus it is bonus time between December-April, so some people have a chunk of cash to burn on something silly.

The point is to get it on the shelf where it can be sold over Christmas. It's not a software release, hardware has a loooong shelf life. Getting the hardware out (oo-er) gives the early adopters time to get theirs which should drive sales during holiday periods.

PostRe: PlayStation Vita sales thread: 1.8m shipped by 31/3/12
by Monkey Man » Thu May 10, 2012 2:21 pm

1.8 million. That's how many PlayStation Vitas were sold as of March 31, as per Sony.

The information was revealed in a Sony earnings call following the company's annual earnings report today.

CEO Kaz Hirai on the system's sales:
"About Vita," Mr. Hirai said, "the last year, [we sold] 1.8 million units for US, Japan, Asia and Europe. And as a starting phase, I think that was a good start."

Mr. Hirai offered the following assessment on the importance of software for the Vita, moving forward.

"A game platform, like Vita – the software is the key to success, how good the software is," he said. "We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business, that is the basic line.

"And vis a vis Vita, at this moment, there is no decline or lack of motivation as a portable platform. And also, in order to connect with the Network, this is a very important product indeed for us, and therefore we still have a very high motivation to develop this further. There is no change. And services and software must be strengthened.

"In other words, the collaborative approach is very important, so is third-party. And from first party studios, the titles will be presented one after the other, so please look at them and give your evaluation based on them."

Sony expects to sell a total of 16 million PSP's and Vita's in its next fiscal year.

Pretty woeful but to be expected considering its opening 4 months in Japan and 2 in US/Europe. That 16m figure is optimistic to say the least.

The price needs to come down, we all know that the price isn't that high when you consider what the machine is. But to hit that mass market it needs to be £180 max.

It's widely available for £180 right now, though.

It needs to match the 3DS for price on console and software. I know it's a much higher spec'd machine but the price is comparatively high and the software prices prohibitive. Over £40 for handheld software is madness.
