Just the vibe I get from Rik and Staydeads posts I guess.

Rik def doesn't want it to fail. Told me he is there as soon as Killzone arrives.

Like me he just wants the right price and games. Not failure.

I think it is difficult to judge whether something is doing bad or good for the current climate. I'm not in the market for a handheld, but if I was, I'd rather get this than a 3DS. My kids are interested too, which means sooner or later we may pick one up.

Really?! Have you ever read GRCade? Frequently far more hate than love, I'd say.

In GR's defence I reckon there's been a more kindness and getting along than ever before in the past 12 months.

Or maybe that's just how it seems to me. I just love everybody here.

In other words, the RoW managed in less than two weeks to match Japanese sales in two months. I suppose it's not that surprising considering how much bigger the Rest of World is compared to Japan, but still food for thought.

On a UK level, the estimated minimum of Vita games sold in boxes is 80k. Factor in digital distribution (especially Motorstorm RC) and I can easily see the true figure being over 100k.

Although I was semi-serious with my post... I'd love nothing more than for the Vita to do well over the next few years.

I just honestly think it won't. In the UK anyway.

If Killzone would have been a launch game I would have got one, I can wait until that arrives as there is nothing else I really want. I just think in the long term this is a shrinking market as phones/tablets get more powerful.

The problem I have with phones and tablets is that they represent the worst of both worlds in consoles and PC gaming. You get your closed environment, reduced flexibility in controls, lack of minor upgrades and lack of overall customisation of console gaming with the constant demands to upgrade, even far beyond what is expected in PC gaming. If you want to run all of the latest and greatest apps, inevitably you'll have to buy the new iOS device, whereas with the exception of some tech demos, even fairly old PCs can attempt to run the latest and greatest. You also have the problem of game quality; most of the games on the App Store can be broadly split into three categories: over-glorified Flash games, DS ports and ports of games that could have been ported to the DS.

It's says so in the App Store. For example, DoDonPatchi Blissful Death:
Compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (4th Generation) and iPad 2

Note that the iPhone 4 was launched in 2010. I'm sure you can find plenty of people in the PCGT who has computers older than that who can still run everything at max. Hell, my laptop (also from 2010) still cuts the mustard with all of the games I've tried on it.

(Cave shumps seems to be one of the major exceptions to my aforementioned catagories)

Games that work on both have a plus logo next to them on the App Store.

So if you take the Japanese numbers out that's like 610,000 Worldwide.

Seems a little low but like people have said, it's hard to tell in this current climate what equates to a good launch now.

There are already games out that don't run on the original iPad?!?

Yep. Admittedly the game in question launched this week, but still: a game on the App Store that doesn't work on the original iPad. This is what I mean by the pressure to constantly upgrade: iOS devices have a shelf life of two years, three at a push.

There's plenty of games before this week that chug like hell on the original Ipad.

Sounds like a solid launch to me (well Japan aside, didn't the sales drop off second week onwards?) taking into account the impact of smart phones, which are to some degree a substitute product. The PSP on the other hand was unlike any handheld before in terms of sheer power and media capabilities, and had less competition.

Now it is about keeping the momentum going and steady. They've hit hard with adverts and media awareness, this needs to be followed up with more of the same, a solid summer 2nd wave of games, followed by an autumn/winter selection with good bundles to buy. Nintendo did it with the 3DS and Mario, Sony has to match this. Plus keep going on the App/social networking front. It's a trump card 3DS lacks to a large degree.

Really? Any examples where I can download a demo? We have both the iPad and iPad 2 so I'd like to see a performance difference.

Just complaints I've heard from friends and people on gaming podcasts also highlighting the problem. I don't have an Ipad so can't help you any more than that really.

I think it was The Bombcast who were complaining that Lumines chugs on the original Ipad, only last week.
