It does look good, guys! It's gonna be so neat to see what games developers can come up with.

So... you all want the logo to be a bit bigger and bolder? ;-).

Will adjust it later!

I'm only messing Jawa, I'm enjoying reading these even if I have no intention of buying. Your enthusiasm is infectious

But yeah if you could sort the logo that would be great :shifty: if you make them both the same height, then they'll sit together regardless of width.

Aye, just teasing :)

I'm never going to get one of these but it does look really cool and I loved the Doom implementation the first time I saw it!

twitter.com/playdate/status/1400845333064679424

PS: don’t worry, pre-orders will NOT be starting immediately after the video — we’ll give you plenty of warning before it’s go time. (And thank you so much for even being interested in pre-ordering in the first place.)

PPS: three things we're authorized to leak now

① Playdate's final price is $179.
② We've doubled the internal storage to 4GB.
③ And! We've DOUBLED the number of Season One games. No joke. 24 games come free with your Playdate.

More in the update!

I'm still very hyped for this. I'd love to make a game for it (every unit is a dev unit). I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

Genuinely more excited for this now than a lot of the E3 streams

“three things we're authorized to leak”. That’s called an announcement.

I'd completely forgotten about this, it's a bit pricey but love the unique crank. The Lua SDK isn't available to the public yet, hoping it's high-level like Love2D then I might have a go.

I’m really keen on this device, I’ve not really read up much on it but if the price is right I’ll jump on one

Less than 1 hour to go for the E3-adjacent stream:

This is looking really cool, creator of Obra Dinn is also working on a game.

I love the different ways they have used the crank, my only concern is it’s not a backlit screen so might be hard to play in some environments.

Pre-orders open next month!

Not sure how it works for international shipping. I'm definitely going to try and get one asap, it's looking really neat

Looks great!

As Jawa is no longer with us can someone else be given ownership of this thread to update the OP and thread title?

I was half tempted to get one of these, but seeing that dock with the pen - “Oh, aren’t we just SO WACKY?!” - doesn’t give me much faith in them to deliver.

The price is high, but expected for a niche & attractive device.

My only misgiving about ordering is the screen - I don't understand why it's not backlit and colour. I had a gameboy then a gameboy colour, and never wanted to return. The black & white choice seems a bit "hipster".

It might not surprise anyone to hear I am a fan of the 1-bit visuals! I think it's an advantage for a "novelty" console to have a distinct style to it visuals, similar to how the PICO-8 (although it's a "fantasy" console) has specifically chosen limitations and a colour palette meant to make games for it recognisable as PICO-8 games. The playdate, other than being actual hardware, shares a lot of design principles with fantasy consoles and their like, with the idea that limitations inspire creativity and help a console stand out. Being hardware means they can do that with the crank too.
