It's similar to FIFA's engine transition in FIFA 07, it was technically impressive, far more realistic than FIFA 06, but it just wasn't fun to play.

Yeah only Master League games so far.

Thought I'd try and Download the new Data pack. Started it at 8am, and currently 31% of the way through!! 3 hours to download a data pack!! How big is this thing?

Anyone else had the same issue? Pretty sure it's not my connection as I was having similar problem last night.

Albear, there has apparenly been difficulties with the data pack for the 360 and PS3 versions. There's a workaround on 360 but the PS3 version is suffering from long download times and corrupt data.

I'd suggest holding off for now; check out user feedback on the forums at PES Fan for how other folk are getting on.

I was going to download the game from the PS store today but I'm not so sure now... it seems like Konami are going to need a couple of days to wok through the data pack and online gaming challenges.

Cheers.

Just got back from the shops to see it was at 66%.

Then the console hibernated.

I have to ask how you're so sure of that

They just don't, man it's like you work for Konami or something.

Yeah, this isn't a bad analogy, though the full game is better than the demo. I still don't think it's quite as purely enjoyable as last year's, though having said that, last year's game had plenty of foibles of its own. I think this is a step in the right direction, but it's going to be next year where we really see the benefits of moving to the Fox engine.

I decided to go for the digital version on PS3. Having read views here in GRcade and on the PES Fan forum, I wasn't sure what to expect; some folk were proclaiming the gameplay as the best ever whilst others were decrying the game as completely useless.

I downloaded the data pack without difficulty - perhaps the teething problems with this over the weekend have been resolved. Before playing I adjusted a few options; I set shooting type as Basic (i.e. as per the previous version) and turned off the commentary (as I have never been a fan of commentary in any football game to date).

I've only played three games against the CPU but I'm pleasantly surprised. The graphics are, in my view, very impressive. The animation is superb and certainly a step up from previous versions. The ball feels like it is an entity in its own right and not glued to player feet. The gameplay is different to the previous version; movement is more realistic and there is a lot more physicality. I'm a bit unsure about the recovery speed of defenders as generally they seem a bit too quick. The goalkeepers are, as ever, fantastic one moment and a little dodgy the next. The menu navigation seems fine; not turbo speed but far better than the demo's turgid responses. I haven't tried online play yet as I've read the servers are still a bit slow for PS3 but apparently they have improved from the launch weekend and a patch will be released shortly; I hope so as my gameplay on PES 2013 was virtually all online.

I've enjoyed it in these first few plays; like most football games it will take time to learn the moves and get used to a few quirks. A little back-heeled dink past the 'keeper in my third game gave me that old PES feeling that I enjoy. There are some negatives but, for me, the feel and potential make this something worth putting time into.

Yeah I would go along with that. I've played probably about 10 Master League games so far, and my shots per game/goals is steadily rising as I get used to the nuances of the new engine.

Still have been unable to DL the Data pack, Does anyone know exactly what it does?

It's just a tad too sluggish for me, but part of that could be down to the players ability that I'm using (80 for Dembele is far too low IMO)

As said before in this thread, I could see the next one being fantastic if they just turn up the responsiveness by about 20%.

As a side note, in my ML game that I am playing, Arsenal are currently sitting at the bottom of the table with 7 losses from 7 games, Is someone at Konami a Spurs fan?

"Responsiveness"... I think you're right and that's the key issue. I've just played five online games and the responsiveness was too slow; it feels like you have to press buttons a second before you want the move to happen. The physicality of the player-to-player interactions seems to take a bit too much precedence over speed of play; it's realistic but doesn't increase the fun.

Even so, when a move works out it feels terrific. It's tough but rewarding, so I'll continue putting the effort in with the hope that I'll understand the gameplay structure better and get a bit slicker.

PES 2014 uses a brand new engine doesn't it? So if it's a brand new engine, and the game still has the same problems (e.g. absolutely inept goalkeepers, and the defence running away from strikers) then it's because Konami want it that way.

In which case, "this year, they've fixed it!" will never apply. It will never be fixed until somebody else makes the game. PES will never be THE footie game ever again, will it?

I dont know if this happens all the time on PES (in the demo it didnt) but I dont think its fair to use a gif to say the game is flawed, You can do that with any game.
