CVG bounce in with an 8, noting the improvements but also highlighting some drawbacks.

I suspect that PES is the definition of a marmite game; folk ae probably are not going to be swayed by overly positive or negative reviews. The over-riding theme amongst the reviews I've read seems to be that learning and practice is key, and that's the long-tem reward that I've enjoyed in the last version. I'll be giving it a go.

CVG gave PES 2013 a 9.1

Seriously wondering whether there's something wrong with me for liking the demo, I am pretty annoyed that I can't get the full range of skill out of players. I can see a clear difference when controlling the top players, but none of them feel like their real life counterparts.

Seems like reviewers have tested out the training mode and have discovered there's no way to get the best out of players.

Why has this thread got the single 6 verdict in the title? There's more 8s and 9s around so far. Perhaps the GTA thread should have the Escapist 7 in the title rather than the Edge 10.

Oh well, I'll get over it.

What a load of bollocks. I don't often get annoyed by a review, everyone feels differently about each game, but that attitude annoys me. I played Pro Evo/ISS for over ten years, so don't appreciate being told that I must be the sort of person that prefers licenses over gameplay. I play the demo every year, having always fallen for the 'it's back!' hype, always wanting it to be good, and for 3-4 years have been genuinely disappointed.

Its just PES elitism at its worst.

Perhaps the demo isn't the best way to completely judge a game...

...you know just saying.

Then why do Konami insist on releasing a demo that leaves such a sour impression on a product they have been working so hard on?

But I thought this was one of the Top 10 games of this generation?

Because they pretty much have to release a demo.

Perhaps PES is just a game that doesn't demo particularly well, you have to put time into playing the game to get the most out of it.

EDIT - Which if you think about it is better than a game that demos really well but when you put time into it you find that it actually has a load of issues that weren't apparent to begin with.

By the sounds of some of these reviews though, that's not the case anymore. I've scored some really classy goals in PES 2013, great movement and first touches, in comparison PES 2014 feels floaty and shallow like FIFA.

I loved the demo when I first played it, but when I tried really pushing myself I just couldn't get the full range out of players, every game just feels like a laid back training match compared to older games.

I nearly always find myself really enjoying the demos of football games and then hating them when the full game is released because when you out the time in, that's when the bugs etc begin to show up.

Indeed. Most of my friends were PES in the PS2 gen and moved onto Fifa. None of them have said anything positive about the new demo.

Love Official PlayStation Magazine's strapline for their review*:
Messi on the pitch, messy off it

*Even though the review is titled PES 2013 :fp:

Not surprised that it's been given lower reviews than 2013. It's got some cool new features and they've changed the gameplay, but the bottom line is that it's still the same unrealistic, fundamentally flawed game but without that PES feel to it. Which was pretty much the only reason I kept buying the game, this will most likely be the first PES game that I won't buy.

Scores on the doors so far are placing it with a similar Metacritic rating to the 2012 and 2013 versions. Comments in the thread suggest that most folk will be sticking with their preferred choice this year. That may be a good thing as Metro.co.uk think both are worth playing:

We’re prevented from saying anything about FIFA 14 until the embargo lifts next week but it seems fair to say that PES is going for the more realistic simulation and EA for the crowd-pleasing mainstream action game. Both approaches are perfectly valid, but what’s changed from recent years is that it’s now a choice between too equally good but purposefully different games.

Confirmed most predictably average game of 2013.
