Yesterday saw someone post a quote by Mark Fisher somewhere which really rang true: "it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism"

I agree. You want to make people sympathetic to your cause. They aren't doing this.

People really care that much about some glass?

A lot of the media are reporting it in a way that doesn't make it at all clear the painting wasn't damaged, for obvious (and dishonest reasons). I can understand people being upset initially but can't fathom people still being upset once they find out it's behind glass and no damage was caused

Can't see any mention of it in the P1 rules. Although I guess following those rules means we should technically be splitting this discussion out into another thread.

I posting about this here a form of protest?

The problem is that most people just see the headline, or the main points of the story. Every article or report I've read about it has "The painting was behind glass" buried a few paragraphs deep.

The right-wing media and their billionaire paymasters know this and it's part of their attempts to keep the public riled up against these protestors.

Well the thread rules say that this thread is for "venting about personal issues", and that the onus is on people to make a new thread if they want to "instigate a debate". And I think people know that posting opinions which are explicitly and directly about current affairs and politics is going to start a discussion.

As much as I fully support civil disobedience(!) I'm not trying to be awkward or make problems for the Mods here - I don't personally care either way, except that I've bit my tongue a couple of times since this was brought in and I wanted to clarify whether we've officially given up on it or not, if that makes sense. I'm absolutely not calling for like "warnings" or "intervention" or anything like that, I just wanted clarification and potentially a thread split if one is deemed necessary.

I've split out the topic in part because that was the intention of the rules but also because it's better as a separate topic anyway.

(The rules were added to give some explicit awareness to how the thread is sometimes used for venting and it's good to be considerate of that before jumping on someone for an annoyance you disagree with. I don't think that was happening but I will use any excuse to push my anti-megathread agenda)

I like to think Van Gogh would have been anti-megathread and pro-soup

Pro-soup? You're getting confused with Warhol.

If you went back and told Van Gogh about this incident, I'm sure he would have said, "Waar heb je het over? Waarom zijn je kleren zo raar?" and I think that's really beautiful.

Pretty sure he'd have said "Kunt u iets luider spreken alstublieft, ik kan u niet horen?"

Nah, he'd be saying "Dus ze kreeg de topbaan, vermoordde de koningin en ontsloeg haar minnaar, allemaal binnen een paar weken?"

I haven't been following parliamentary politics very closely over the last few weeks, what I'm getting from this post is that Truss is involved in some kind of centuries-long Assassin's Creed style conspiracy. Maybe I should turn on the news.
