As great as all these steel and glass structures are, I think it'd be kinda awesome if we could build some good old fashioned stone monoliths. Modern day equivalents of the great stone cathedrals of medieval Europe, except for more uses than just churches.

Thing is, what form would the modern equivalent take? The Cathedrals of Europe were all based on the design of the crucifix. Now that's of no particular importance, it would be difficult to think of a symbol that unites us, except for consumerism. Maybe a giant ATM?

If their structures must be patterned after symbols that unite us, what symbols actually serve to unite modern people?

Um...the human form? A 300 metre tall statue. Maybe with its right arm fully extended to symbolise shading the sun coming into its eyes.

People frequently unite under national banners, which would mean designs patterned on those of some national flags could prove useful starting points. Religions still hold sway of billions of people, which means that their core symbols could also be used. Other areas you might look to are history, literature, even biology, cinematography and science fiction. Unifying symbols are everywhere.

You're right about the human form though, which is why it'd be strawberry floating awesome to go to work in an office somewhere in the torso of a gigantic stone and steel equivalent of the Colossus of Rhodes.
