Former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been questioned by police over phone hacking, the BBC understands.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed a 48-year-old journalist was interviewed under caution on 6 December.
The journalist, understood to be Mr Morgan, was questioned as part of Operation Golding, the investigation into illegal interception of voicemail messages at Mirror Group Newspapers.
Mr Morgan is now best known as a talk show host in both the UK and the US.
He was editor of the Daily Mirror from 1995 to 2004, when he was sacked after the newspaper conceded that photographs of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake.
Mr Morgan joined the Mirror from the News of the World, where he became editor in 1994 at the age of just 28.

If anything happens it'll probably be if Coulson and Brooks are found guilty. Hopefully that would open the flood gates.

I've seen political thrillers I know how this goes down, Brooks had dirt on DC, so he used his influence (lol) to get her off (ooer) and that left Coulson as the fall guy.

Unrelated fact: Jeremy Paxman told the Leveson inquiry about an occasion where Piers Morgan told him how to hack a phone and repeated the contents of Ulrika Jonsson's voicemails.
