Yo, I don't have Splatoon, but I'm curious: like, does this signal the end of Nintendo's ongoing engagement with the game? If so, is it a finished, take-it-or-leave-it product with no further special events, content packs, etc. planned? If so, is this because the player-base has shrunk, or just because Nintendo are done with it?

There was talk of paid DLC after the free content updates ended but nothing seemed to come about. I believe that we did get some additional free content, after the supposedly last update, but it does now seem that Nintendo has finished adding to the game and running events like the Splatfest. The player base still seems healthy as it doesn't take long to jump into a match.

Other games published by Nintendo that stopped receiving new content after a year include Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. I'd guess that Super Mario Maker updates will only last until the end of this year.

That's really interesting, it seems they have a specific content update strategy in mind, then. I guess as one company with a lot of successful online games to support (as you suggest, Splatoon, Kart, Maker and Smash Bros.) they don't want to plough too much development time long-term into those games at the expense of producing new ones (and the NX!).

As an aside, I hope ports of these games make it to the NX during the launch period, particularly if they can be online-compatible with the Wii U versions. They'd be mad not to do that IMO.

Hopefully it is because the team has switched their attention to finish Splatoon 2 for NX launch.

The amount of value I got for 20 quid pre order is insane, this is easily my favourite online game ever and the only one I have played substantially, easily approaching 100 hours or more and pretty much all online.

Switching off the servers would be insane, it has to be their most successful new IP in years and there is a thriving community including in Japan where console sales are weak. I expect them to keep it online for a good while. The only thing sad about the lack of updates (after tonnes of weapons and several great maps) is there's nothing to spend millions of coins on, I've bought almost all the gear, although you can spend it on re-rolling gear attributes. There are so many styles you can play this game using gear to complement it so for a relatively simple premise it has huge longevity.
