This is all sounding rather positive and laying some misconceptions to rest; I wasn't aware there was a single player element, better still it sounds like a very different experience to the MP mode. The hub world sounds great too.

The only worry is the longevity of the MP community, but as there's no real FPS competition on the Wii U it stands a good chance.

The Wii U is an easy console to love once you've got one, unless perhaps you're a Nintendo shareholder.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

What is this, 1999?

Mario Kart 8 had voice chat, right?

Nope, it also runs at a rather quaint rock-solid 60fps. I mean who gives a gooseberry fool about frame rates these days? Pixels are where it's at.

Silly old Nintendo.

I don't know how big this will kick off by I know loads of people who want to see this become the next big competitive game. I'd love that if it became a tournament game like Smash bros or something.

It has (really bad quality) voice chat but only when in a lobby before and after races, and only when playing with friends and that doesn't include tournaments for some reason.

Ergo, it may as well not have any voice chat.

It's amazing to think Nintendo created a dedicated channel for video chat (including the ability to draw where you want to be touched) but then decide not to include voice chat in games. I could get a non-friends restriction but if they are on your friends list then you should be able to voice chat if you want.

Anyway. More footage!

This. What kind of put me off playing MK8 with people on here is no voice chat. Like strawberry float am I going to keep refreshing the forum thread while we're in the middle of playing. I know for some Mumble is a scary PC thing, but it's super-easy to set up, can be used on any mobile device/laptop/pc whatever, has great sound quality with low bandwidth. It's not hard.

I'll lead by example by being on Mumble this Friday while playing Mario Kart. Click here, or the link in the top-right corner of your page, to find out more about setting up Mumble.

I'd quite like to play Splatoon with some people from here so it's a good idea to get used to using Mumble while playing now. I had no problems using it when I was playing Smash Bros 3DS with Qikz when it launched so the Wii U shouldn't be much different.

The chat during a Kart night could get pretty lively  . Unfortunately my computer and U are in different rooms so I'll remain silent during the Kart and Splatoon nights.

So you're saying in other games that voice chat reduces frame rate?

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."
