I'm trying to set a private server up for Minecraft bedrock edition. I have the server running okay (can connect locally via an Xbox on the same network) and likely need to open some ports on my firewall for the outside world, but there doesn't even seem to be a way to join custom servers via the Xbox game? LAN servers appear under the friends tab and the servers tab has 5-6 "featured" servers and that's it?! From what I can see it looks like you are stuck having to pay a monthly subscription on Xbox if you want a private server where friends can play in a world (without being limited to the chosen host being online playing the game when others want to play). Seems a bit backwards.
There isn’t an option for private servers on Xbox.
You can fudge it though, you can use
https://github.com/jhead/phantom to set a proxy up that will make your private server appear as a LAN server and so work. There are also android apps that will do this too, you fire the app up, add your server address and start the proxy then when you open minecraft on the Xbox it shows as a LAN server,
