A handheld Sega Mega Drive that plays original carts has been announced.

The Mega 95 from Hyperkin is an entirely portable system that will support all officially released cartridges for Sega’s system.

According to The Verge, the machine is based on the currently existing MegaRetroN HD Gaming Console from Hyperkin, which is also compatible with the Sega Mega Drive.

The Mega 95 will also come with a Nintendo Switch-like dock which will allow players to plug the machine into their television and connect additional controllers.

The machine can toggle between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio an comes with a 5-inch display. The Mega 95 is claimed to have a battery life of around 10 hour from a full charge.

A release date or pricing information for the Mega 95 has yet to be confirmed by Hyperkin.

This could be really great! I like the idea of using original Mega Drive carts in a portable system and also being able to - Switch style! - play on the TV as well. After all these years... it's Nomad II?!?

This really is what the Nomad did 29 years ago.

Is that a 16:9 screen? :dread:

This same company did the portable SNES and used to claim that there were no 4:3 panels to put in a handheld, well anbernic alone have been pumping out loads of 4:3 handhelds, no need for this to have a 16:9 screen at all.

I'm guessing the real reason is cost - it's probably a lot easier and cheaper to now source a standardised 16:9 screen.

Reminds me of how the screen in later editions of PS Vita no longer looked at one with the surrounding case. I'm not a fan of products where you can clearly distinguish where the screen has been plonked into the case (though I realise this is easier to replace).

This is the first time I've ever heard of the Nomad. Imagine how things would look these days if Sega hadn't completely messed up in the 90s.

I always wonder whether wide screens make sense for these kinds of handhelds. Surely a 4:3 screen makes more sense?

EDIT - I promise I missed Craig's post there. :shifty:

Thinking about I suppose it has to be pretty wide to actually accommodate a cartridge slot in the first place so I guess it would look a bit ugly to try to fit a 4:3 screen around that without a massive plastic bezel.

Lots of people seem to want a Nomad now but dont seem to want to spend that much on it... if they can make this thing work well, feel quality then it might hit a hole in the market for Nomad wanters on a lower budget... If i am out the house I just play Megadrive on my PowKiddy Q90.

Same, I remember being desperate for one of these back in the day.

Then not that long afterwards I realised I could emulate all the MD games I wanted on my PC and finally unlocked that same feeling :datass:
