No doubt skill plays a part. I wouldn't say it was significant myself. Mainly knowing the track and using weapons at prime times.
Rainbow Road mind you...
Knowing the track and the timings of weapons are both skilful endeavours. For example as you move up the pack, you receive fewer homing weapons and so you have to drive skilfully to line up your shot and hit other racers to get first place. You also need skilful driving and aim, while remaining alert, if you want to look behind and shoot weapons at nearby racers. I try to do this before a set of boxes so that I can increase my lead while acquiring a new defensive weapon.
That being said, there is still a great deal of skill in driving as you can hug the insides of corners as you drift to increase your lead. I do this to give myself a greater lead so that
if when I'm hit, I have more time to recover before someone passes me. This requires careful driving so that you avoid falling off/hitting a wall/driving on rough terrain.
That does seem to be the case which is disappointing. It would be useful to have a way of seeing the average number of points a racer gets per race. That would be a better way of determining rankings.

After I'm all registerd with a network id, is it just a case of searching for the lobby number in the topic title? Or do I need to add loads of user names first for it to be visible? I only ask as I fear I'm going to run out of time if its the latter!
You can join the races by using the tournament code in the topic title. There's a new one up now because the one we were using earlier will end at 7pm so hopefully everyone will be in the new tournament.
If that doesn't work, try going to the friends list option in the Mario Kart 8 online section and joining someone from your friends list. There's a good chance that everyone will be in there already so you'll only need a handful of names on your list if you're pressed for time.
I usually keep an eye on the thread in between races and I should be online for most of the evening so hopefully you'll be able to join in. Be sure to post in here if you have any issues and/or want to play. It's a great way to join in the fun!

Unfortunately you will have to wait if the tournament is full but post in here to check the status of the tournament. There's a chance that someone will be on the verge of leaving anyway so you won't have to wait long.

Played a bit in multiplayer with friends on Friday and have been blasting through GP mode to unlock as much as I can since that. 3 starred all the Cups in 50cc so time to move onto 100 soon I think.
What's the deal with online multiplayer with you lot, just enter that tournament code from a few pages back and wait for a space to be free?
Yep, you just enter the tournament code in the tournament section of the Mario Kart 8 online menu and you'll be ready to race. More often than not, you'll just have to wait for the current race to finish before you can join in. The code in the topic title will be live from 7pm so you can use that or the one in older posts if people start playing soon.
By the way, here's another video from today:
