Naughty Dog has announced the release schedule for the long-awaited The Last of Us downloadable content.

Writing on the PlayStation Blog, community manager Eric Monacelli described the promised single-player DLC as "an ambitious story with strong ties into the narrative" of The Last of Us.

The developer has just finished a casting process for a new character, and performance capture will begin next week. Naughty Dog expects the single-player DLC to release in December 2013 or January 2014. In teasing the DLC Naughty Dog released concept art, below.

Meanwhile, Monacelli confirmed the first of three Season Pass DLC drops: the Abandoned Territories Map Pack. This includes the Suburbs map, which features a dynamic dust storm; the Bus Depot map, which has wild giraffes in the background; the Hometown map, which emphasises stealth; and the Bookstore map, which revolves around vertical gameplay. These maps will be released on 15th October in North America and 16th October in Europe.

The single-player content is the second DLC drop. The third is multiplayer focused and due out in the first half of 2014.

Naughty Dog is adding bonus items to the Season Pass "to make the wait a little bit easier". "We have over 60 different head items for your multiplayer character ranging from a Nightmare Mask to a Pigskin Hat that will be free for all Season Pass buyers," Monacelli revealed. "These head items will be available a la carte as well, but it's a tremendous added value for all Season Pass holders."

I am a bit gutted that the single player dlc comes out so late as I was hoping to get through the DLC before the PS4 arrives. I don't think I will have both consoles hooked up once I get the PS4.

Bookstore map sounds fun. Dropping down on fools.

I hope enough people buy the map packs so we can have decent Survivor Sunday games.

Unfortunately I am PS3-less for the time being, might be able to sort that out come Christmas.

Picked this up last week finally and been playing it in bits over the last week.

Mixed emotions so far, I'm finding the setting, story and characters to be fantastic and in typical Naughty Dog fashion they've created a world that I really want to immerse myself in. However, I'm finding the combat elements really frustrating so far, frequently due to the AI.

The AI just seems to be woefully inconsistent, I've had human enemies be staring straight at me yet they haven't spotted me, then other times I can be unmoving and hidden in darkness and they'll see me immediately. Same with clickers, I've near enough run straight past them on occasion and they don't notice me but other times I've been creeping around silently and they'll come right at me. Allies regularly just wander into the path of infected as well. It makes trying to take a stealthy approach to combat quite difficult at times yet when you're in a proper combat situation it's all too easy to get overwhelmed as most of the weapons are ineffective when you're up against more than a couple of infected.

As such I find it treads a very fine line between being tense (yet enjoyable) and downright frustrating.

You playing on Normal? Play on hard.

It's a bit weird on normal to make the game not too difficult.

Yeah I'm playing on normal, only a few hours in so might give it a whirl on hard and see how I find it.

I'm happy to accept it being harder if it means the AI behaves a bit more 'normally'.

No doubt I will die an outrageous amount of times though. Clickers already terrify me :dread:

I got the Season Pass when I bought my PS3 LoU pack-in. Nice to get the first DLC drop - the maps look great. I just wish ND had provided AI bots for those like me who would prefer offline MP (it's fantastic, for instance, in GoW Judgement Day). I wonder why some developers just don't do this? Seems to me it would provide such longevity to the MP maps - all that work creating them and within a year they're all but deserted or dead in most cases. LoU maps would work brilliantly with AI bots.

I have played some online LoU MP - I might go back in again, but it can be fairly brutal for a hopeless MP gamer like me. :shifty:

Join in on a Survivor Sunday session Cal, or find some people from here to play with. And get a headset, really helps when functioning as a team. We had some decent games last night, though it seems that the majority of players (myself included) can't make it regularly. :(

Thanks, I may just do that, but I wouldn't want to be dead weight on anyone's team. TBH, I did manage to score a few kills when I was last online with the game. Shocked myself. I know it's all about practice and learning to accept I'll get owned for a good while until I'm better at it. I have to say it's definitely a unique MP game - slower, more sneaky, much less hectic and confusing than most. I think this is why I'm drawn to it.

Pfft, everyone starts as dead weight. Survivor Sunday thread, I believe you know that chalkitdown has recorded quite a few instances, and in one is when PeterCrisp debuts. Yeah, he barely knew what he was doing, so tagged along with me for most of the night while I explained strategies and playstyles. Doesn't take long to grasp it, though I would advise as a beginner that a Support class is the way forward, or perhaps Stealth. And just quit out of any match with absurdly high-level players, you'll get a buggering so firm you wont have any opportunity to learn anything. Scoping out the maps is the essential first action, once you've familiarised yourself you can start setting traps and other fun stuff. One of my favourite moments was in a game of Survivors, Herbi was constantly flanking around the map to get the drop on us, so I waited behind a wall for him. Sure enough, he ran right past me and I shivved the guy. 8-)

Yup. Actually I'm mistaken, you don't have the new maps. You have the Season Pass. So all future DLC is yours too.

A very interesting read through the spoilers thread (after I finished the other day). I thought the ending was incredibly brave, a superb one last one-two to the face. What a strawberry floating game.

It certainly looks fun - I wish you guys would have posted more videos of your Survivor Sundays. Anyway, you've been very encouraging. I'll keep an eye out and perhaps sneak into a session with you lot. Just need to get a headset.
