I've not seen it, but it sounds like it was a faithful recreation of the source material.

I was thinking of ordering this when it eventually comes to blu ray, but now i'm not so sure.

I have already pre-ordered Dune though, as that does look fantastic.

You made the right decision.

Good couple of days for films for me. Saw Dune 2 in iMax, which was my first (and last) in that format. Pointlessly loud, and way too close to the screen, for me it was not an ideal way to watch a movie. Film was great though, a real visual feast. A lot of the religious fundamentalism stuff is a bit on the nose (I remember this being the case in the Lynch version too) but a great story nonetheless.

Also saw Poor Things which was superb. strawberry floating mental, but superb.

Yeah, you really have to be careful where you sit with iMax's for that reason. Given the extra cost I don't really feel it's worth it even if you do get a good seat.

Regarding the religious fundamentalism stuff being on the nose, I think I'd agree but to be fair, it is based on a book from the 1960s when I think both that, and its' breakdown of the "chosen one" narrative would have felt more groundbreaking for the time.

Also saw Poor Things on Saturday night and agree it was strawberry floating mental though I wasn't a huge fan. I can see why it has had the plaudits because it's an incredibly well made (and original) film but it just didn't click for me.

I absolutely loved Poor Things.

Agree with the Napoleon criticism though, I was really hyped to see it in the cinema and it was dull, messy and overlong.

The weirdest thing about Napoleon is how it seems to be presenting itself as a really serious biopic but then at times, with some of the dialogue especially, feels like it's venturing into full on parody. It's extremely jarring.

I would definitely advise sitting at least four or five rows back at the IMAX, aiming for a seat as central as possible. I get a thrill out of the ridiculous volume. If you don't like that then yeah, not worth the cost.

The religious fundamentalism definitely felt more... fanatical than in the book. I don't actually remember there being any groups opposing the Lisan Al-Gaib prophecy as overtly as they do in the film, either. It seemed clear they wanted to present a younger generation of Fremen who didn't believe the superstitions of the older generations.

There was also a removal of (what is clear now that I've read more about it) homophobia from the source material. I read that Herbert rejected his gay son, and didn't attempt to hide his hatred of gay people. Thankfully, certain aspects and events involving the Baron did not make their way into the film.

Thanksgiving

Yeah, a horror film about thanksgiving. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be a horror comedy or a straight up serious horror film but it is pretty funny. Some gruesome deaths.

And imagine my surprise when it’s directed by Eli Roth. I usually don’t like his movies (Green Inferno was pure nasty.)

So Close - 5/10

A Hong Kong movie from 2002, it starts off a bit tacky thanks to some ropey effects and Matrix-style wirework & slo mo (which was all the rage at the time). But as the movie continues, it does get better, and there's a great swordfight at the end.

Reality 6/10 It's engrossing in places, but doesn't quite work as a film, something feels slightly off about it (I'm not sure if it's based verbatim off the transcripts or not but if it is that'll explain it). It's short and Sidney Sweeney is on the up at the moment, so I'd recommend giving it a watch (Included on Prime).

As the forum's resident Ghostbusters nut, I was so excited to go and see it today.

It was.. okay? I think it was good? I can't tell.
I think I need to watch it again. But, there's a lot that should've been taken out of it. And loads of bits in the trailers just flat out weren't in the film

I'm not disappointed, but... I wish it were better.

Top Gun Maverick - 9/10

It is still as good as my first viewing at the cinema.

I saw an IGN review on it and they pointed out that they need to focus on actual ghostbusting like they did in the first movue and that there was far to many characters in it which led to nowhere in the actual story. The Slimer sub plot in the firestation is just a rehash of the deleted sequence with Louis from GB2 by all accounts

Dune 2 6/10 I was really disappointed, I didn't really care for the first one but this had really good reviews so I thought I'd try it. Unfortunately I prefer the first one. It has some decent set pieces, but this is overly long with a stretched out plot. The most interesting bits (everything not related to Paul) are brushed over and only just about cling to coherence.

Ghostbusters - Frozen Empire - 6/10

It's fine, it's well directed, has a good plot and the cast are all great, it's missing something, most notably the jokes. It's very safe in that regard, some comedy characters but no amazing one liners or great bits. The family drama side of things really doesn't add anything to it. The returning original cast are fantastic apart from Murray who looked half asleep and maybe did half a day's filming.

The Phoebe character and her sub plot were excellent and it would have been nice if they had given that story a proper ending rather than playing it safe so they can sell the film internationally.

Some of the film felt like a Disney TV show, a filler episode. It doesn't have the heart of the last film but it does give some of the original Ghostbusters a chance to shine. Dan Aykroyd felt like he was playing himself when talking about ghosts and his love of them.

Overall it's not brilliant, it's not terrible, it's just a chance to see more Ghostbusters which is always welcome.
