Alien Covenant.

Not really sure why this has got so much hate, a perfectly functional sci-fi horror.

I think a lot of the hate it gets is because it's inevitably going to be compared to the best alien films, and it comes out very poorly from those comparisons.

I enjoyed Covenant as well as having lots of problems with it, and when describing those problems I invariably come back to saying how much better Alien and Aliens were.

It was a bad film period, let alone it being part of the franchise. Prometheus gets a ton of gooseberry fool but it was trying to tell a story that had some interesting concepts with extremely bad characterisation. I can’t think of one redeeming element from Covenant. I paid money for this at the cinema and was pissed when I left

That film is an actual piece of gooseberry fool. Awful story, dialogue, characters, plot and CGI. And that’s BEFORE you consider the frankly enormous steaming turd it curls out all over the rest of the - let’s face it, historic - franchise. I found it mortifying and hilarious in equal parts, which isn’t great.

So there.

Michael Fassbender is good in it, I think the scenes with him acting against himself are worth watching.

Prometheus is worse

I'm legit angry at what they did to the origins of the alien and engineers. Absolute dogshit.

I really liked Prometheus too.

I liked Alien Covenant, same goes for Prometheus.

When it comes to the original Alien movies, the only one i really liked was the first one (which is a genuine classic), the second was okay but it was way too long.

The third and fourth were generally iffy anyways.

Saying Aliens is “ok” is like saying a £100m lottery win “isn’t bad”.

A Monster Calls - 8/10

Thought this was very good. I've always liked dark fairytales/fantasy á la Pan's Labyrinth, and this has some similar vibes. There were some really good performances and it was thought provoking and relatable. Recommended for sure.

Aliens was Ok, I saw it at the cinema. It is more action than horror and couldn't replicate the shock factor of Alien. I think Covenant is more toward horror than action and David twisted it a bit. Looking at IMDB scores, 65% critic and 6.5 viewers scores is pretty much in line with my view.

Pacific Rim Uprising: 4/10

Oh dear. As predicted, this Del Toro-less sequel to a Del Toro film is nowhere near as good as the original Del Toro film. Right from the very first scene, backed by a Run the Jewels soundtrack, it's apparent this is little more than a Transformers film. The adolescent cast, the overly colourful and cartoonish cinematography, the ridiculous plot and cardboard motivations...it lacks everything that made the original good.

Pacific Rim was a B-movie made by a master craftsman with a passion for B-Movies. Del Toro's film had heart and, if not depth then something approaching heart. This film was a flashy summer blockbuster which, although vastly superiour to every Transformers film ever made, had absolutely nothing in common with its forebear.

Every Transformer film? But the 80's animated film is amazing.

I think the original looked a bit "cheap" during the non-robot/Kaiju scenes, personally.

It’s not that edgelord an opinion, the first film was a bit gooseberry fool. Better than Bay’s Transformers movies (obviously) but it wasn’t that great a movie.

Being an edgelord would be saying "Pacific Rim was ruined because the male lead had to work alongside a girl. Girls wouldn't be able to pilot giant robots like that, it would mess their hair up  "

Being a serious film reviewer is saying things like "Pacific Rim, meh it was better than Transformers, but still a bit gooseberry fool."
