I've just reached Rusu Mountain and it's brilliant.

The graphics are beautiful.

Finished helping Taro this morning. It really hit me with an emotional sucker punch.

Can't say I was too connected to any of the characters, they don't feel like real people.

I'm on the last boss and boy does this game love to introduce mechanics it hasn't taught you about at the worst possible moments.

Firstly mid air traversal using your bow and arrow which is always discouraged, secondly having a unique way to defeat the boss it tells you nothing about. If you're gonna have a unique mechanic tell me! I'm not strawberry floating psychic, dying and having to start a 10 minute boss battle again because you wanted to do some dumb pointless gimmick isn't fun.

Every other enemy in the game dies to normal attacks, not one specific attack you almost never use after the first 3 hours.

Finished this over Xmas and echo a couple of the thoughts on here - the bosses are tough and introduce some tricky attacks to use, which you've not had to use previously. And the collectables must be the most pointless in any game for years - collect hats for your rot. What happens when you buy new hats and put them on your rots? Er, nothing - the rots following you around just look different (although I did actually like kitting them out in Santa hats, to be fair   ). Yeah, I know, you could argue that a lot of collectibles, apart from for the benefit of trophy hunting, are a bit pointless but the ones in Kena feel even more so! :)

Speaking of trophies, I only have a few left and don't feel encouraged to go on. There are three combat ones (like use the same dash to kill three enemies) that you can't get post-game if you have killed all of the random enemies during the game as the amount of enemies throughout is relatively sparse (and they don't respawn). The last two trophies would be completing the game on Master Difficulty (during which I could, if skilled enough, tick off the combat ones) and the Platinum.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game - 7/10 - but there was something lacking to push it that a little higher for me.

It feels like is this game was made by a bigger team with a bigger budget it could have easily rivaled a Nintendo game.

The fact this was made by an indie studio is kind of astounding.

Thinking about it the balancing/design issues are probably a lot to do with the fact they didn't have a publisher sized QA team.

Completed.

What a wonderful game. It is beautiful, charming and joy to play it. I've managed to find all collectibles and I'll do the Master difficulty run soon.

Hopefully, they will make a sequel or a bit similar game to this. :toot:

I love this game. Its stunning. I love the graphics and art, I love the music. The combat is fun, difficult and rewarding.

I have just come from the gunk and thought it was alright. Playing this directly afterwards and this puts the gunk to shame. Its one of my favourite 3rd person combat adventure games i've ever played. I can't wait to keep playing. Lovely.

It really is great. Only thing that really let's it down for me is the story and how 'quiet' the world is.

Though given it's an indie game they definitely did the best they could for a new IP.

The quiet hasn't bothered me. I think the characters you meet and follow are nice and engaging. I’ve got the sound turned up and I love the music, it’s got a lovely flow to it, matching the progression through the level and game.

Incredible effort from a small team.

I bought the physical release for my Mrs for Christmas, but as she's never heard of it and the cover art is pretty vague, she doesn't really seem keen to actually play it.

What a game this is. Incredible game and you would never know it was from a small team. Story telling is interesting and excellent. Music, art and sound are top notch. The combat is challenging and the bosses can be frustrating, one or two in particular. But an overall incredible game.

Seriously up there with Horizon zero dawn in my opinion. A strong focus on combat, story and platforming and sometimes Horizon just tries to do too much (but I think Horizon is a great game too).

Seriously good game and something all should play.

I definitely found them a challenge, I don't think I beat any of the main ones in less than 3 goes but none took me more than 45 minutes. Maybe it's the speed of reloading on PS5 which makes it seem less of an issue. I see a lot of people on Resetera complaining that the Parry mechanic is too hard to pull off and while that's true (I think it's been patched now), I barely used it. I found it much more efficient to run away and find opportunities to attack. A lot of your attacks interrupt enemy attacks so once you find an opening its relatively easy just to exploit while backing off and using the shield when necessary.

I would say the trigger that made me switch to story mode was the
corrupt woodsmith,
until that I was relishing the challenge, I accepted I would die a few times(or a lot of times) until I started registering their moves.

I dont have long to go now, finished
Corrupt Toshi
who was also a bitch last weekend, and should finish this weekend, but I think I will just proceed on easy.

edit: dont know why I spoilered the bosses names :slol:

Toshi was tough for me, especially phase 2. I had to re-learn how to parry and then use the new sprint-dash-shield ability to throw him off his pattern.

Watched my girlfriend play through this, which I quite enjoyed. I've never been one for watching others play, but the general setting and vibe lf this was quite appealing

Hopefully I can now reclaim the PS4 for my own use!

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Master difficulty sounds a bit of pain, especially while battling the bosses.

I'll give it a go soon.

Curious to see what the next project for this studio will be.... Would love it if they were working on a ps5 exclusive, they could make wonders with that!

Yeah. I’d like to see more. Some DLC would be a nice stop gap before an origin story of some kind for Kena.

I’m still a bit amazed by how good this was, how small the team was, with it being their 1st game. Yes it takes a lot of the best bits from other games, Zelda and Horizon, but the animation and art style makes it fresh. Exceptional.
