Israel-Gaza Conflict

Admin Note

Thread. I have no comment on this topic, nor did I decide to discuss it - this thread is split out from our general politics discussion from the time at which the conflict arose. It exists for no other reason than to facilitate discussion specifically about the conflict in and around the Gaza Strip between the Israeli Government and Hamas.

Id be very surprised if they don't fully take over Gaza and force everyone out as refugees into Iran. Which is probably the softest response we can expect. The papers today are very telling as to how the world sees the issue. So they have the world's blessing to do what they want now. Probably go down as one of the most important days in history as what happens next will change the world.

It is concerning. This has the potential to get really bad.

If they fully go to Gaza they will not be forcing anyone out. I think if people don't get out ahead of time there's going to sadly be very few survivors. The Israeli government has got more and more right wing with Bibi essentially having a dictatorship at the moment and he and his wife are very vocally anti Palestine.

I've always supported Palestine in this conflict and in doing so had huge arguments with my step mum who spent 20 years of her life living in Israel, but in this case I think the actions that Hamas has decided to take - kidnapping women, parading dead bodies in the streets, killing civillians they've made it incredibly difficult for pretty much anyone feel that they're in the right. Palestine basically got strawberry floated over by Hamas, because they've given Israel enough ammo now to basically just continue and even escalate their nearly 100 years long ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians. This is about to get really bad for the innocent people left in Palestine and I really hope that they have somewhere to flee to safety to survive the coming counter attack.

I think we are conditioned to believe that there is a good side and a bad side in any conflict.

The reality is that the Israeli government are banana splits. But so are Hamas.

It's the ordinary Israelis and Palestinians who have to suffer because of the actions of the banana splits.

I can't see that any of this is going to end well.

The grief and misery to come from this will be imaginable. We could be about to watch another 'darkest day in human civilisation' play out in front of us.

The wider impact will be enormous and far-reaching. In a very, very bad way.

Just waiting for the tanks to go in. Can’t help but think that Hamas have completely strawberry floated up. Both sides are utter gooseberry fools though.

It's being widely reported now that over 250 people were killed at they music festival in Israel that was attacked. Absolutely horrible stuff.

Whataboutery incoming but I absolutely agree. Just pure bloodlust and barbarism that has nothing to do with 'freedom fighting'.

I think Israel Discussion should have it's own Thread. The situation seems to warrant it.

I would split posts out from this thread but last time I tried that I deleted the entire football thread.

Oh, really? Try it again. It's only the football thread.

I can respect the cause and not the individual actions. 260 music festivalgoers did not have to die. As an Irish person, I’ve always drawn a sharp line between my feelings towards the IRA from 1916-1921 to that of its actions in the 70s and 80s.

I’ve changed the thread title to the term being used by BBC, Sky and Wikipedia. That will be the extent of my custodianship of the thread, as I never asked for it.

I think the thread owner should be changed to a neutral account, like "Administrator" or something like that. That way rinks doesn't have to be the OP of what is likely to be a charged topic if he doesn't want it. (Not implying there was any deliberate attempt to slight rinks or anything, I know it's just a coincidence the thread was split from there, just suggesting how it could be alleviated.)

Yeah, that’s fine by me. I’m not actively disassociating myself from it. Just don’t want there to be any expectations of me. A neutral owner would probably be wise.

Also, it removes the temptation for me to make the thread title something appalling for my momentary amusement.

While the best outcome for this would be an immediate cease fire, i fear the situation is now just too far gone.

Also, the blatant targeting of civilians by Hamas has been utterly vile.
