Our house was broken into last night. They didn't get anything because they couldn't get into the main house through the conservatory (the inner door was locked). After their lack of success at our house they did rob two others badly - playstations, laptops, even cars - anyway I was just wondering what advice people have for securing their home and possessions. I'd be really keen to get some sort of motion activated spy camera I could have hidden in my room which I could turn on before I leave the house. Anyone know of something like this they could recommend ?

Other than that I'll have to secure the shed and any tools we have lying around. I've got find my mac/iphone set up too in case they're stolen.

they tried the same with our place about 3 years ago, came in through the conservatry and couldn't get any further.

we got the police round and they dusted down and got the strawberry floaters finger prints and charged him, dunno what happened after that.

I do know that he was well known to them as a burglar, although they used a funny name for it, seems he's been done 5 times before and is stil rolling around trying his luck.

All we can do is live in hope for the eventually Dredd style police state.

I used to install Alarms for a job, but only for a few months so I'm no expert.

Really it all depends how far you want to go/how much you want to spend. A simple box on the outside wall with a flashing red light might be enough to encourage a burglar to try a different house instead of yours. Or you can go the full way and put contacts on every door and window, with PIDs in every room, and have the whole system monitored 24/7 with the police alerted when it's triggered.

I don't have much experience with cameras, but I think you'd be better off with a visible camera rather than a hidden one, as I'm sure you'd rather the potential thief saw the camera and walked on rather than they break in but get caught on camera. A guy I worked with last year bought a setup from Brookers that was pretty nifty. He had a TV in his kitchen which displayed the camera feeds constantly and you could switch between them with a remote. Not sure how the recording worked on it though, think he spent about £400 + TV.

Edit: A quick browse of Maplins and there are plenty to chose from. SOmething like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/4-channel-320gb-network-dvr-with-2x-night-vision-cameras-and-smart-phone-access-632889 plus a monitor should get you going. I don't know if that particular one is any good though, I just picked it at random, so do a bit of research first.

My worry is that the harder I make it for burglars to get in my house, the harder it'll be for me when I inevitably lock my keys inside.

Imo, dogs are easily the best alarms. Real burglar alarms go off at strawberry float o clock in the morning and make all your neighbours hate you.
