Posthelp ordering US t shirts (sizing question)

I want order a couple of tees from the US problem is i'm not sure what size to get

I have a 42" chest and i like my shirts fit quite snug but not skin tight so should i go medium or large?

There is but it goes by width shoulder to shoulder.....should i just double that size to get the chest?

Use a piece of string or something then measure that with a ruler?
