Don't underestimate the fuckmendously stupid things that idiots will do if they think someone is picking on their favourite thing.

True that. That stuff was plain stupid though. This is poorly institutionalised, insecure, hypocritical, social justice keyboard warrior nonsense.

The debate back re jerfffstman and giant bomb etc was valid. This sexualised, masturbatory "journalistic ethics" Vs social justice from manchildren is mind numbingly inappropriate. Personal lives should never be affected on this level and it boils right down to women being used as vulnerable, scapegoat playthings, easy targets. Misogyny hangs over this like a lead balloon.

Ask Reddit, I dunno.

But as a supporter of Gamergate I am, apparently, personally responsible for the actions of every other supporter.

Wait, you can 'support' gamergate? That's a thing you can do?

Wait... Which side are the 'supporters' on?

Oh, this is a minefield.

I'm all for projecting a positive image of gamers with something like sick kid's save point but I don't believe it's possible to character assassinate a demographic and therefore take personal measures to attack personal individuals to serve a cause that ultimately is about managing expectations of a toy. It's insane. I'm not sure what gamer gate, like some kind of anonymous cell, is trying to achieve. It's hashtags taken too far. The dialogue happening seems illusive at best.

At this point it has become hopelessly nebulous.

I don't see the problem, damsel in distress is a plot device not a character trait. I'm not seeing how anyone but people desperate for a gotcha moment could fail to understand that.

Damsel in Distress is a plot device just like how a macguffin is a plot device (or in the case of old mario games, a macguffin damsel). I don't know why people want to argue against that.

Her whole series of videos is based on the pointing out of one trope without any evidence that proves it's detrimental.

I'd assume that some people assumed she was referring directly to characters because that would actually be directly detrimental. Using an otherwise good character in a plot device does not make them instantly a worse character or any less interesting, as she seems to imply.

I mean right at the start of the game one of Jade's men dies as a plot device. He's a bad character because all he does is die, not because he's used as a plot device.

The point isn't to prove these tropes are detrimental to each individual case it's about showing how common they actually are and how them being so prevalent is a bad thing when looking at the bigger picture.

It's not the characters she's after, it's the plot device that's the problem. It's overused, adds very little of worth and yet it's treated like it's this holy grail of plotting.

It's lazy writing, I'm not seeing the problem with wanting better. The fact that there's a vocal group who think otherwise is why we can't have nice things.

So why only focus on that particular plot device? Something bad happening to someone the main character cares about happens in pretty much every popular story.

There's nothing wrong with what you've said, but that's not how she's framing the argument is it.

If one were to take Tropes vs Women as gospel, there is literally no way to include women in games in any way shape or form that is not "problematic", and even leaving them out is a problem.

Femfreq has constructed a perpetual outrage machine.

And yet Anita can't state enough how much she likes Beyond Good & Evil.
But yeah whatever, literally.

Digging through the Megadrive back catalogue the other day. You know, it has a surprising number of games with female protagonists in there.

Arrow Flash, Burning Force, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Dahna, Alisa Dragoon, Valis, Alien Storm & El Viento, to name a few.

And you had to help them achieve their goals by taking direct control of their actions. Typical.

Are you trying to say there are a fair amount of female protagonists in games compared to male? The ratio must be 100:1 or maybe even less than 1. She mentions good examples of every trope she makes a video on in the actual video, so I'm not sure what you're getting at.
