It's precisely what everyone who paid her money on Kickstarter was thinking. The irony hasn't escaped any of us, I assume?

Sorry, misinterpreted your point then. And yeah, I guess I don't see it as that big an issue, but I've no real disagreement with anything you've said. As long as there's encouragement from elsewhere (i.e. real life) I don't see a huge problem with these kind of games still existing. I've yet to watch the video, got kinda sidetracked, but if she's wanting to do away with these kind of themes altogether, that's probably a bit excessive IMO.

You say that as if it's a point of contention; the sexism of Disney is something which has been recorded an immense number of times.

Well, maybe so, but I know plenty of women who grew up adoring those films and dreamt of being like the women in them. They didn't see them as anti-women, and I'd wager they still don't. And I really doubt they did any harm to them either. It just strikes me as one of those things that's being made out to be worse than it really is.

Can we get a kickstarter to get that woman back in the kitchen? :slol:

Anyway, it's just a cool thing to bitch moan about by misunderstood women. So what if we have to rescue a lady? I'm sure that we do have to rescue men as well in games and we don't cry foul about it.

And people paid kickstarter for her to make that video? Is that correct? All I have to say:

If true, WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. A single bloody video is not going to change anything.

Don't worry, I think she plans on making at least one more.

Happy International Women's day!

Right that is Daniel Craig in drag in support of International Women's Day. Yes that is James Bond himself. And we all know James Bond loves rescuing women and then shag them. So where does the border comes in?

And I find it sexist that we don't have a International Men Day and I don't cry buckets about it.

It's not going to change anything, realistically. You know why? We all KNOW videogames are a male pursuit, and therefore sexist after a fashion.

The problem is that the only people who give a gooseberry fool (feminists) don't want to play, and definately don't want to create video games. So the problem remains.

The problem is that a "feminst fantasy" makes for a really poor story.

I kind of agree. It's a similar thing with feminism in the media or in politics.
My girlfriend is a feminist but she doesn't want to go into a career that would actually have any effect on how women are treated. So the problem persists.

Has anyone ever made a video venting outrage on behalf of all men about male stereotypes in entertainment media? Or because a majority male creative team construct these characters, is it seen as legitimate representation?
Do gay men or those whose ethnicity isn't 'caucasian' get a fair shake?
How many black characters are mysterious voodoo tokens or gangsta stereotypes?
How many Asian characters are either martial arts masters or drug kingpins?
How many Latino characters are "yo, ese" gangbangers or hot-headed good guys?

Too much credit is being given to videogames - in the case of Aliens: Colonial Marines the game doesn't even work properly nevermind providing some all-inclusive, considered commentary on society's ills. If I was going to be rescued by some Amazonian goddess that represented physical perfection because I was ill-equipped to deal with the situation I'd been forced into by some great evil, would I complain? Would I bollocks. I'd hop into her arms and let her have her way as soon as she dragged my helpless, whimpering little body to safety. What are my other options?

By all means, make an entire series where tiny men are rescued by big-titted beauties with a dagger between the teeth. Girl power. Would that undermine the role of real men in reality? No, it's a fantasy. A really strawberry floating stupid fantasy that you control using plastic buttons. When was the last time you saw a game made where the protagonist realistically represented the girl/guy playing the game?

Some people have too much time on their hands. It's just a groaning start point and a strawman argument to claim anyone is properly characterised in videogames. I'm always left feeling like these women don't actually want to be women.

Anyway...why would you rescue a woman that could rescue herself? Women can be weak, like men can be weak. Unless the argument by her is that no woman should ever be seen as submissive or disempowered? In which case, neither should any man. Writing an interesting, gripping story where everyone is equal is not only unrealistic, it's bloody difficult. Much too difficult for studios who are obsessed with bland market appeal and COD sales figures.

47% of video game players in the U.S. are women. Adult women form a greater proportion of people playing games than boys 17 and under.

Okay, thanks for letting us know. Good job you're here to speak for them.

The usual standards for discussing feminism on a video games forum are truly being met and even exceeded here. But hey

I was wondering why she looks so familiar. She is the spit of Nick Cotton from EastEnders.

I didn't watch it all, I don't why she would want to talk about that on camera, the fat woman was definitely acting up, but duly removed.

Lies, damned lies and statistics!

I'd bet most of these girl-gamers are playing shite iOS/facebook/non-games. Just limit the study to PC/360/PS3 where the meaty games are and see those stats change massively.

But this throws up another point. If approximately half of video games are women, then where exactly is the inequality? Is feminist media suggesting that women are somehow wrong in what they're enjoying?

I imagine a lot of women put up with sexist stuff in games simply because they don't have much choice in the matter. It's inequality in terms of content.

Agreed. I mean, nobody's even accused anyone of white-knighting yet! That's when you know we're really near the bottom.

Ginga I think someone went to make one of these about negative stereotypes toward male characters after all the fuss this initially generated; I'll try and look it up and see if anything came of it

Or, y'know, ignore the sexist stuff and simply play the games that they enjoy. For example, Left 4 Dead.

I simply don't think the gap that Anita is trying to suggest actually exists in any sense except the purely economic. Publishers would LOVE their games to appeal to a wider audience. The problem is that (a) nobody is making them and (b) there's no audience even if they were.

That's not to say that there's no progressive steps. Ezio of Assassins Creed 2 is an example of a protagonist carefully crafted to appeal to both genders
