I've got 11 hours of messages to catch up on now, this is too much.

There are definite mechanical problems with a 30 person text chain, that I don't really know how to get around.

I'd be up for a meet up. Last one was when chalky stayed at my flat.

Yeah, it's a bit of a problem. I don't know what is best to do. Given the purpose of the endeavour, I really didn't wish to exclude anyone who was interested... but I never expected thirty people to get in touch.

I'm trying to apply a rule of thumb for the WhatsApp chat: (unless directly replying to another message) if what I'm saying could be said instead on the forum, I'll do that instead. But I must be honest: staying caught up on the chat has massively cut down my time available to browse the forum. And I'm one of those people fortunate enough to find the time to catch up on 300+ messages at a time.

One other concern is that the people who were most looking to make some better connections out of this, will be put off by the barrage of messages. IMHO, it's all been fine so far in terms of content - it is as it would be among friends - but the volume is somewhat overwhelming.

It'll probably slow down though. It's still a bit of a novelty right now.

It will inevitably slow down, plus I think one just has to adopt a different attitude to chat platforms. You engage with the current topic as and when you "enter the room" so to speak, rather than trawling back over everything since you were last there.

That is probably a good call. I also don’t think there’s anything wrong with splitting into a separate chat for certain specific things, as long as everyone knows and is given the opportunity to join.

And I’ll be honest, I’m mostly thinking football. It was fast moving during the UCL game last night and I honestly can’t promise I won’t be a bundle of verbal diarrhoea on Sunday either.

I think a splinter chat for football is a good idea, to be honest.

I can't imagine how annoying it'll be for the people who aren't into it when big games are on.

Had to check the fixtures to see what game you were referencing!

West Ham vs. Burnley is going to be huge.

If people want a slower moving place to chat as well there's the GRCade discord which is a little bit easier to follow longer term. I know people want whatsapp because it's slightly more personal, but feel free to use discord as well :D

Splinter groups for football / booze are a good idea in the main, particularly as there will be folk within the chat who specifically want to avoid such discussion. My only hesitation for doing so is to further add to the perception that we're undermining the forum - as that is ostensibly what the football thread(s) / alcohol threads are for!

As Jenuall says - "trawling back over everything since you were last there" is perhaps not the best approach to take but I find it difficult not to!

I don't think it undermines the forum at all. The league football thread in particular is not busy anyway and a majority of us are probably more inclined to talk off the cuff about what's going on while still posting in the main thread at the same regularity. I'm also happy to administrate it, to keep the pressure off Dan having to sort out two large group chats.

And, I mean, on a simple level it's just nice to have people who have an interest in Championship football to chat to on matchday!

It’s definitely a huge benefit of the forum, much slower paced and easier to reply to threads as and when! In the last couple of minutes there’s been yet another 30 odd messages in the chat
