The Era thread for this game is a car crash (pun intended).

Some of the criticism's:

It's too realistic looking
The car physics are weak
Looks too 'video gamey'
It looks cross gen
Lighting looks fake
Visually GT7 is jaw dropping, this isn't near.
GT7 looks significantly more realistic

It’s really hard to comment on the physics when no one has really played it, it looks great though and it sounds really promising from what we know already.

People just love to compare the 2 franchise (understandably) but GT7 also looks great, I’m even surprised how nice it looks on my PS4 if I’m honest, obviously this looks better than the version of GT7 I play but it should do, it’ll make for a very good Digital Foundry video comparing the two on their best platform.

I doubt it'll be 4K with ray tracing, hopefully it'll be 60fps though.

I’d be amazed if we get 4K, ray tracing and 60fps. I’d like to be amazed though

Whatever it looks like, being able to afford the cars will be a bonus.

I’ve not played a FM game in a while (last one was 3), have micro-transactions become common place in the series like they have with the last few GT games? I’m expecting some but hopefully not too much.

I agree that hopefully most cars will be affordable, don’t mind the odd excessive one to aim for but they have to be really special.

I expect there will be ongoing season passes for this, if it works out as an evolving long-term project instead of a single release. But I heard that they'd taken the simulation ethos too far in GT7, extending it to the in-game economy - so realistic that nobody can afford the top cars.

Forza 6, in 2015 was the last one to have microtransactions (although Forza Horizon 3 in 2016 also had them), where you could buy cars for real money like GT, but they have been absent for Forza 7 and Horizon 4 and 5.

I've never used real currency on any of them, but Forza 5 was such a grind for currency. Forza 6 just threw money at you. Forza 7 was somewhere in the middle.

GT7 did that because it has micro transactions that circumvent the in game rewards so you can get a car cheaper.

Forza Motorsport won't have micro transactions after they put them in FM7 then spent time patching them all back out again.

Season passes I reckon will be in this tho.

Chances are I’ll be going for whatever the top upgrade/pass is at launch anyway so hopefully that will include a reasonable amount of the content they release at least in the first couple of years for this, if its being supported for the entire life of the Series consoles there will most likely be numerous packs, the later ones maybe at extra costs.

Just watched the trailer and gameplay in 4K and my goodness it looks and sounds amazing

This should be one of the first games where we see the full potential of the XSX on show.
No holding back for the XBO so maybe it will have RT as didn't microsoft say they had extra hardware in the XSX for RT which is why they had to wait a bit longer for the hardware for the devkits?
I'm sure I remember seeing that.

Yup microtransactions were introduced in Motorsport 3 and continued through to Horizon 3. I think Motorsport 7 had them at launch (or pretty much days before launch) similar to Battlefront II and then they were removed leaving the loot pack system in place.

I guess with Game Pass and DLC cars they don't have much of a place in Forza anymore

This certainly looks an exciting evolution for the franchise. That river looks so detailed I want to go play in it. Can't wait for its release so I can see what the other tracks in the game look like. And get a true next-gen picture of my Mini.

Don't think there's any new footage in the Forza Monthly stream, but they're going into a lot more detail on some of features, and talking about tracks. Kyalami is in. A few years ago I'd never have cared about real life tracks that much, but now the more real tracks the better.

Just caught up on the FM section of Forza monthly and it really does sound promising, they also said there’s more to share about career as well in a future Forza Monthly.

Summary -

all footage is running on PC, but settings were tested on Series X
FM7 on XBO was 1080p/60 with 4x MSAA
FM8 changes methodologies, seemingly no AA in some scenes
Turn 10 might ditch MSAA (note Playground is adding TAA to Horizon 5)
numerous scenes look lower than 4K, as low as 1080p
other shots are native 2160p
some evidence of image reconstruction or variable rate shading
forward+ rendering over deferred rendering, making vrs a very valuable tool
coherent or sharper, mirror-like, rays are cheaper to render
nearly all mirror-like reflections, even brushed metal objects in the demo
the 1 minute demo has better RT settings: RT global illumination, and possibly reflections
the 1m trailer is made up of replay footage
replay picture qualities are not available in-gameplay (like in Horizon 5....until modders fixed that, and Playground changing it for the DLC update)
FM8 sideline is massively improved

trees in FM7 were 2D billboards, in FM8, trees are 3D with self-shadowing branches
lots of smaller rocks and grasses in FM8
sideline objects has more material variation in FM8
cones even have subsurface scattering!

IQ on Series X is still in question
Series S has been said to have RT, but is also a question as many devs are ditching RT on the system

I feel like full ray tracing is to this gen as 4K was to the previous one. A big deal was made of it as console launches but they’re probably not quite powerful enough for it. Maybe we will see mid Gen refreshes after all.

If your hardware is capable of it, Variable Refresh Rates and Dolby Atmos/3D audio are the tangible improvements at the moment. 120fps and Ray Tracing often have too many caveats for my tastes (notably the graphical downgrades or hobbled framerates).

This seems to happen every new generation though. Even the PS3 talked up 1080p but the number of major games that could natively do it was minuscule.

Ray tracing is definitely something I’d turn off to get better performance elsewhere, I turned RT off in Cyberpunk and while it looked ever so slightly worse, the frame rate being halved wasn’t worth the slightly better graphics.
